How to clip streams for TikTok, Reels and Shorts

A stream is hours of live reactions, and a few of its moments are worth more as clips than the whole broadcast is as a replay. Here's how to get a stream, find its best moments, lay them out for a phone, and post them where new viewers will find the streamer.

Updated 6 min read

In short

  • Twitch clips run up to 60 seconds and Kick's up to 3 minutes; for a whole stream, work from its replay.
  • The best moments are reactions: the play, the fail, the laugh, the rage. The chat and the channel's top clips point at them.
  • For gameplay, stack the webcam on top (1080 × 608) and the game below, with captions on the seam between them.
  • Clip streamers who've asked for clips, like through a clipping campaign, and keep their name on every post.

Why streams are worth clipping

A streamer is live for hours, reacting in real time, and the best seconds of it get lost in the replay. Clipped, those seconds travel: on TikTok, Reels and Shorts, people who'd never sit through a four-hour stream watch 40 seconds of its best moment, and some of them come back to watch live.

That's why so many streamers pay for clips, through their own clipping programs or campaigns on clipping platforms. For a clipper, one stream can mean a week of clips. See what clipping is for how campaigns work.

Getting the stream

Each platform lets viewers clip in its own way, and keeps the full replay (the VOD) for a while:

Clips and replays on Twitch, Kick and YouTube
TwitchKickYouTube

Replay kept60 days for Partners, Prime and Turbo; 14 for Affiliates; 7 for others30 days for verified streamers, 7 for othersStreams under 12 hours can be saved as videos

A platform's own clip is the quickest way to grab one moment, and Twitch now makes a portrait version of each clip, with the webcam and the game kept in frame. For a whole stream, work from the replay: it has every moment, not just the ones someone clipped live. Replays don't stay up forever, so clip a stream within days of it ending. For Twitch's clip button, portrait clips and downloads step by step, see how to clip on Twitch.

Finding the moments in hours of stream

Nobody watches four hours to find forty seconds. Let the viewers point the way:

  • The chat. A wall of the same emote, or everyone typing at once, marks a moment. Note the time and check it.
  • The channel's top clips. The clips viewers made during the stream, sorted by views, are the moments they already picked.
  • Timestamps in comments. On a replay, comments with times in them are the moments people remember.

What makes a stream moment work as a clip:

  • A reaction you can see. The play that shouldn't have worked, the fail, the scream, the laugh that won't stop. The webcam carries it.
  • A story told to the chat. Streamers tell their best stories live, unscripted.
  • A hot take. A strong opinion on a game, a player or a rival, made for the comments.

The webcam layout

A stream is wide: the game fills the frame, and the streamer is a small box in a corner. Crop it to 9:16 and you lose one or the other. The layout clippers use instead stacks them:

  • The webcam on top, across the full width: a 1080 × 608 strip, the 16:9 shape most webcams have, with room above the face.
  • The game below, the 1312 pixels left, cropped from the middle of the screen, where the action and the crosshair usually are.
  • Captions on the seam between them, where they cover neither the face nor the game.

Make one in your browser with the free split screen video maker: choose the stream, drag one box onto the webcam and one onto the game, and download a 1080 × 1920 MP4. When there's no game (a “just chatting” stream, say), frame the streamer alone, like any talking clip.

Cutting and captioning a stream clip

  • Keep it short. Most stream clips that work are 15 to 45 seconds: the setup, the moment, the reaction.
  • Caption every word. Streams are loud and fast, and many people scroll with the sound off. See how to caption short videos.
  • Mind the music. Music playing on stream can get a clip muted or claimed on the apps. Pick moments where it isn't loud, or where the streamer's voice carries the clip.
  • Open on the hook. Put the most surprising second first, or a line of text that makes people wait for it. See how to make clips that go viral.

Clips from a whole stream, automatically

Going through a stream by hand takes longer than the stream. Clyper does it from the YouTube link of a finished stream (up to 4 hours) or an upload of the replay (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 4 GB):

  1. It finds the best moments and cuts each one to whole sentences, up to 30 per stream.
  2. It spots the webcam and stacks it over the game for the shots it's in, and frames the streamer alone when there's no game.
  3. It captions every word, on the seam between the webcam and the game.
  4. You check each clip in the editor, then download 1080 × 1920 MP4s with no watermark.

Clyper takes YouTube links, so for a Twitch or Kick stream, download the replay and upload it, or use its upload on YouTube. More in stream clips with Clyper. Clipping Kick? See how to clip Kick streams for its clip button, its replays and the footage you're allowed to use.

Posting, and whose streams to clip

Clip streamers who want clips. Many run clipping programs or campaigns that give clippers permission and pay them per view. Clipping a streamer who hasn't asked for it can get your clips taken down. See is clipping legal?

Don't repost the platform's clip as it is. TikTok keeps reused content without creative edits, like clips showing someone else's watermark or logo, out of For You. Cut it yourself, lay it out for a phone and caption it.

Name the streamer in the caption, and use the tags the campaign asks for. Then post every day: a stream clip channel grows with volume. See how to start a clip channel.

Questions

How long can a Twitch clip be?

Up to 60 seconds. Any logged-in viewer can make one, unless the streamer has limited clipping to followers or subscribers, or turned it off. On Kick, clips run from 10 seconds to 3 minutes.

How do I make a stream clip vertical?

Stack the webcam on top (1080 × 608) and the game below, with the free split screen video maker, or use the portrait version Twitch makes of each clip. Clyper does the same from the stream's YouTube link, for its best moments.

How long are Twitch streams kept?

Past broadcasts are kept for 60 days for Partners, Prime and Turbo users, 14 days for Affiliates and 7 days for everyone else. Highlights and uploads are kept for good, up to 100 hours of them in all.

Can I clip someone else's stream?

With their permission, like a clipping campaign or the streamer's own clipping program gives. Without it, your clips can be taken down for copyright.

Can Clyper clip a Twitch stream?

Clyper takes YouTube links and uploads. Use the YouTube link of the stream's replay, or upload the replay itself (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 4 GB). Streams can be up to 4 hours long.
