Clyper vs Submagic

Submagic is very good at making a short video look good: dozens of caption styles, B-roll, zooms, sound effects. Turning a long video into clips is a different job, and on Submagic it's an add-on. On Clyper it's the whole plan. Paste a podcast, a stream or an interview up to 4 hours long and get its best moments back as captioned vertical clips.

Our take

We make Clyper, so this is our side of it. What we say about Submagic comes from Submagic's own pages.

If you start from long videos, Clyper is the better buy. Submagic's plans are built around editing short ones: on Starter, each video can be up to 2 minutes long. Making clips from a long video is Magic Clips, which its help center lists as an add-on. With Clyper, that's the product. Every plan clips videos up to 4 hours long, and you pay for the minutes of video, not for an extra subscription.

Submagic is the better fit if you already have your clips and want to dress them up with effects.

Why clippers choose Clyper over Submagic

  1. Clipping is the plan, not an add-on

Submagic's plans count the videos you edit: 15 videos a month, up to 2 minutes each on Starter, 40 videos a month, up to 5 minutes each on Pro. Clips from long videos come from Magic Clips, which its help center prices at $19 a month for 10 long videos (its pricing page doesn't show the add-on, so check there before you buy). Every Clyper plan is for exactly that job, from 150 minutes of video a month on Starter to 1000 on Studio.

  2. It's made for long videos

Clyper takes videos from a minute to 4 hours, by YouTube link or upload. Podcasts, streams, interviews, webinars: the longer the video, the more moments it has to pick from, up to 30 clips. Submagic's help center puts its editor's limit at 2 minutes a video on Starter, 5 on Pro and 30 on Business.

  3. The best moments, not a pile of them

Magic Clips makes 20 or more clips per video for you to sort through. Clyper makes as many as you ask for, up to 30, each one a moment that works without the rest of the video, cut to whole sentences and ranked by hook score. You start with the best one instead of hunting for it.

Where Submagic does more

Submagic has far more caption styles, 35+ against Clyper's 5, with emojis and animations, and it adds B-roll, music, sound effects and zooms for you. It posts to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, X and Facebook, exports up to 4K on Business, and has a free trial.

Clyper's 5 styles are made to be read with the sound off, and they sit where no app's buttons cover them. If you want effects on your best clips as well, they work together: Clyper's MP4s open in Submagic like any other video. More on styles in how to caption short videos.

Moving your clipping to Clyper

Keep Submagic for polishing if you like it, and move the clipping. Paste the long video's YouTube link into Clyper instead of Magic Clips, and up to 30 clips come back already framed, captioned and ranked. Starter is $20 a month with no commitment.

Questions

Is Clyper better than Submagic for clipping long videos?

Yes, that's what it's built for: every plan clips videos up to 4 hours long, finds the moments that stand on their own, frames them on whoever's talking, captions them and ranks them by hook score. Submagic is better for adding effects to short videos you've already cut.

Does Submagic make clips from long videos?

Yes, with Magic Clips, which its help center lists as an add-on to a plan: $19 a month for clips from 10 long videos. Its plans on their own are for editing short videos.

Which has more caption styles?

Submagic, with 35+. Clyper has 5, made for clips and readable with the sound off, in 50+ languages. All 5 are on Clyper's Pro and Studio plans.

Does either add a watermark?

Submagic's free trial does; its paid plans don't. Clyper has no watermark on any plan, and no free trial.

Can I use Clyper and Submagic together?

Yes. Clyper finds the moments and makes the clips; its MP4s open in Submagic if you want more effects on some of them.
