YouTube watch hours calculator
See how many watch hours your views make a month and how long until the 4,000 YouTube needs for monetization, from your views and average view duration.
Your videos make about
667watch hours a month
You'd reach 4,000 hours in about 6 months at this rate.
- Per year
- 8,000
- Per 1,000 views
- 67
- Months to go
- 6
To make 4,000 in a year: 5,000 views a month at 4:00, or an average view duration of 2:00 at 10,000 views.
Shorts don't count, but they bring the viewers who do
Shorts views add no watch hours. But a Short can link to the full video, and the people it brings there are the views that count. Channels post the best moments of each video as Shorts for that.
An estimate, from YouTube's rules: 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months and 1,000 subscribers, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. Hours count over a rolling year, so older ones drop off as new ones come in; the hours you have now are taken as spread evenly over it.
How watch hours work
To join the YouTube Partner Program and earn from ads, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days. Watch hours are your views times how long people watched, on your public long videos.
The 12 months roll: every day, the oldest day's hours drop off. A video that brought in hours a year ago stops counting, so the total can fall as well as rise, and steady uploads matter more than one hit.
Views needed for 4,000 hours
How many views a month make 4,000 hours in a year, by how long people watch:
| Average view duration | For 4,000 hours | For 8,000 hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1:30 | 13,334 a month | 26,667 a month |
| 3:00 | 6,667 a month | 13,334 a month |
| 5:00 | 4,000 a month | 8,000 a month |
| 8:00 | 2,500 a month | 5,000 a month |
| 12:00 | 1,667 a month | 3,334 a month |
Longer videos that people watch to the end get there with far fewer views. Once you're in, see what the views pay with the YouTube money calculator.
Getting to 4,000 hours faster
Keep people watching. Average view duration multiplies everything: the same views at twice the duration make twice the hours. Cut slow intros, and get to the point in the first minute.
Send viewers from Shorts. Shorts don't add watch hours themselves, but a Short can link to a related video, and the people who tap through are watch time. Short clips of each video's best moments are the usual way: read how to turn a YouTube video into Shorts and how to get more views on Shorts.
Questions
How do I calculate watch hours on YouTube?
Multiply your views by your average view duration, in hours. 10,000 views watched for 4 minutes on average is 40,000 minutes, or about 667 watch hours. YouTube Studio shows both numbers under Analytics.
How many views do I need for 4,000 watch hours?
It depends on how long people watch. At an average view duration of 4 minutes, about 60,000 views in 12 months, or 5,000 a month. At 8 minutes, half that.
Do Shorts views count toward watch hours?
No. Watch time on Shorts doesn't count toward the 4,000 hours. Shorts have their own route into the Partner Program: 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, with the same 1,000 subscribers.
Which watch hours count?
Watch time on your public long videos in the last 12 months, including livestreams kept as videos. Private, unlisted and deleted videos, ads, and livestreams that are unlisted, deleted or not kept don't count.
Is it changing in 2027?
Yes, for new applicants. From February 1, 2027, channels applying need 8,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days. Channels already in the program keep their place. Pick the 8,000 goal in the calculator to plan for it.
Is the calculator free?
Yes, with nothing to sign up for, and what you type stays in your browser.
