Increase video volume

Make a quiet video louder without the crackle. It measures how loud the video sounds, the way streaming apps do, and brings it up to -14 LUFS, a common level for social video, or by a set amount up to 20 dB, with a limiter on the peaks. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

How to increase the volume of a video

  1. Choose the video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV) or a sound file (MP3, M4A, WAV and more). It's measured right away, on your device: you see how loud it is in LUFS and its loudest peak.
  2. Pick how loud. Social video brings it to -14 LUFS, Podcast to -16 LUFS, or Turn it up by sets the change yourself, up to +20 dB.
  3. Listen. Play it and switch between Before and After. Turn your own volume down first: a quiet video can come up a long way.
  4. Press Turn it up and download it: a video comes back as an MP4 (or a WebM), a sound file as an MP3. The picture is copied as it is, so it's quick.

How loud should a video be?

Loudness is measured in LUFS, over the whole video, rather than by its loudest moment. These are the levels that are published, and what people aim for where there isn't one:

Loudness targets for video and podcasts
WhereTargetWhat they say
Spotify-14 LUFSTurns louder tracks down to -14, and quieter ones up only as far as their peaks allow
Apple Podcasts-16 LUFS, ±1Asks for about -16, with true peaks no higher than -1 dB
YouTubeNot publishedStable volume can even out the sound of some videos as people watch
TikTok and Instagram ReelsNot published-14 LUFS is a common choice
TV in Europe (EBU R128)-23 LUFSFar quieter than phones: too quiet for social video

A talking video straight from a camera, a call recording or a podcast mixed for headphones often measures well under -14 LUFS, and sounds weak next to everything else in a feed. The meter above tells you where yours is and how far it has to come up.

Louder without distortion: what the limiter does

A file can only hold sound up to a point, 0 dB at its peaks. Turn a video up by 10 dB and every peak goes 10 dB higher; any that pass 0 dB are cut flat, and you hear a crackle or a buzz on the loudest words. That's why the volume slider in most editors stops being useful long before the voice is loud enough.

This tool looks a few milliseconds ahead, and just before a peak would go over -1 dB it turns the sound down for that moment, then eases back. Speech has a few short peaks well above the rest, so holding them down costs nothing you'd hear and lets the whole voice come up. After it's done, it tells you how far the limiter had to go.

Louder also brings up what's under the voice. If there's a fan, hum or traffic, take it out first with the background noise remover, then turn the clean sound up. Adding a song? Set the voice's level here, then mix the music under it with add music to video.

Loud enough for a feed

On TikTok, Reels and Shorts, a quiet video can lose people in the first second: it plays after a loud one, and the volume they had set is suddenly too low. Clips cut from podcasts, streams and calls are often the quietest, recorded for headphones rather than a phone speaker.

Clyper makes those clips: paste a YouTube link or upload a long video, and it finds the moments worth posting, cuts each one on whole sentences, frames it vertically on whoever's talking and captions every word. See podcast clips for how it handles a conversation.

Questions

How do I make a video louder for free?

Choose the video here. It's measured on your device first, then pick Social video (-14 LUFS), Podcast (-16 LUFS) or a set amount, listen to Before and After, and press Turn it up. You download the same video with louder sound: no watermark, nothing to sign up for.

Will turning it up make it distort?

Not here. Turning sound up pushes its loudest peaks past the most a file can hold, and they clip: that's the crackle you hear. A limiter holds each peak down to -1 dB just before it would go over, so the voice gets louder and the peaks stay clean. It holds the samples, not true peaks, so a podcast that must meet a true-peak spec is worth a check in a loudness meter.

What is LUFS?

Loudness Units relative to Full Scale: how loud something sounds to people, measured over the whole file, as the ITU-R BS.1770 standard sets out. Spotify plays music at -14 LUFS by default and Apple asks podcasts for about -16 LUFS. The lower the number, the quieter: -24 LUFS is quiet, -14 is about right for social video.

How loud should a video be for TikTok, Reels and YouTube?

None of them publishes a number. -14 LUFS, the level Spotify plays at, is a common choice for social video: loud enough next to everything else in the feed, with room for the peaks. YouTube can even out the volume of some videos as people watch with its Stable volume setting, but a video that's far too quiet still sounds weak next to the rest.

Does it change the picture or the quality?

The picture is copied into the new file exactly as it was, so its quality, size and frame rate stay the same and the sound stays in sync. Only the sound is re-encoded.

Can it make a video quieter?

Yes. If it measures louder than the level you pick, it's turned down to it, and Turn it up by goes down to -10 dB. Videos up to 60 minutes and sound files up to 3 hours at a time.
