Clyper vs Clipchamp
Clipchamp is Microsoft's free video editor, and a good one. But clipping in it means doing every step yourself: getting the video file, finding the moment, cutting it, cropping it to 9:16 and captioning it, then starting again for the next. Clyper does those steps for you. Paste a YouTube link and get up to 30 clips back, framed, captioned and scored.

Our take
We make Clyper, so this is the case for it. What we say about Clipchamp comes from its own site and Microsoft's help center.
Clipchamp is free, runs in the browser and exports without a watermark. The catch for clippers is that it has no tool that finds the best moments in a long video and cuts them into clips, no YouTube link to paste and no auto reframe: each clip is a cut, a crop and a caption pass by hand. Clyper does all of it from a link, so the time you'd spend in a timeline goes into posting more.
Keep Clipchamp for the edits only a person can make. Let Clyper make the clips.
Why clippers move from Clipchamp to Clyper
One link instead of six steps a clip
To make one clip in Clipchamp:
- Download the video, since Clipchamp takes files from your computer or OneDrive, not YouTube links.
- Watch it to find the moment.
- Split and trim it to open on the hook and end on the payoff.
- Set the canvas to 9:16 and drag the video into place, since there's no auto reframe.
- Generate captions, fix the words they got wrong and style them.
- Export it, then start again for the next clip.
In Clyper you paste the link once, and up to 30 clips come back cut to whole sentences, framed on whoever's talking, captioned word by word and scored.
Long podcasts and streams, from the link
Clipchamp's own guide has you download a YouTube video with another tool before you can edit it, and its help center recommends keeping projects to 10 minutes or less for the best performance. Clyper takes any public or unlisted YouTube link, from a minute to 4 hours long, or a file up to 4 GB, and Studio takes 10 links at once.
The best moments, found and framed
Finding the moment is the slow part of clipping by hand. Clyper reads the whole video, picks the moments that work without the rest of it (as many as you ask for, up to 30 from one video), follows whoever's talking, cuts to the other person when they answer, and stacks a stream's webcam over the game. In Clipchamp you set each crop yourself, clip by clip.
You still need permission to post someone else's video, which clipping campaigns give.
Word-by-word captions and a hook score
Clipchamp's auto captions cover 80+ languages, one language a video, styled by hand. Clyper captions every clip word by word, in the video's language, in 5 animated styles placed inside every app's safe zone, and gives each one a hook score, so you know which to post first. Clipchamp doesn't score clips.

Where Clipchamp does more
Clipchamp is a full editor: a timeline, transitions, text, stock video and music, 100+ templates, text to speech, green screen, noise suppression, webcam and screen recording, and silence removal for everyone. Auto compose drafts a video from your media, and Premium adds 4K and a brand kit. It comes with Windows and Microsoft 365.
If you like finishing clips by hand, keep it for that. Clyper's clips are 1080 × 1920 MP4s with no watermark, so they open in Clipchamp like any other video. If all you need is a crop, the free vertical video converter makes any video 9:16 in your browser.

Questions
Is Clyper better than Clipchamp for clipping?
For making clips from long videos, yes: Clyper finds, cuts, frames, captions and scores them from a YouTube link, where in Clipchamp you do each step yourself, starting with downloading the video. Clipchamp is the better choice for edits made by hand.
Is Clipchamp free for clipping?
Its editor is free, with exports up to 1080p and no watermark. Premium (4K, premium stock and a brand kit) comes with Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Either way, you cut, frame and caption each clip yourself.
Can Clipchamp make clips from a YouTube link?
No: it takes files from your computer or OneDrive, and its own guide has you download a YouTube video with another tool first. Clyper takes the YouTube link, public or unlisted, up to 4 hours long.
Does Clipchamp have AI clipping?
Not the kind that finds the best moments in a long video and cuts them into clips. Its Auto compose, on personal accounts, drafts one video from the media you add, and it has AI captions and silence removal. Clyper finds the moments, up to 30 from one video, and frames, captions and scores each.
Can I edit Clyper's clips in Clipchamp?
Yes. They're 1080 × 1920 MP4s with no watermark, so Clipchamp opens them like any other video.
