Clyper vs Descript

Descript is a very good editor for podcasts and talking videos, and it can suggest clips too. But it's a whole editor, and clips are one tool inside it. Clyper is only clips. Paste a YouTube link and get vertical clips framed on whoever's talking, captioned in 50+ languages and ranked by hook score, without opening a timeline.

Our take

We make Clyper, so this is our case for it. What we say about Descript comes from Descript's own pages.

If what you need is clips, Clyper is the better buy. In Descript you upload the file, open Create clips, choose how many clips, how long and which layout, spend AI credits, and finish them in the editor. In Clyper you paste the YouTube link, and the clips come back cut to whole sentences, framed, captioned and scored.

Keep Descript if you edit full episodes as well. The two work well together: Descript for the episode, Clyper for the clips once it's on YouTube.

Why people pick Clyper over Descript for clips

  1. It starts from the YouTube link

Descript brings in files, from your computer, Zoom or Google Drive. Clyper takes a YouTube link, public or unlisted, or a file up to 4 GB if that's what you have. Clipping someone else's video for a campaign starts with a paste, not a download. You still need permission to post it, which clipping campaigns give.

  2. Nothing to set up

Create clips asks how many clips you want (1 to 20), how long (10 seconds to 5 minutes), which layout and, if you like, a topic, and it spends AI credits on top of your media hours. On Clyper you paste the link and, if you like, choose how many clips you want, up to 30, and more clips don't cost more credits. Leave it on Auto and it works the number out from the video. Each clip is 20 to 60 seconds and cut on whole sentences.

  3. The speaker stays in the frame

Descript's help center lists Center active speaker, which keeps whoever's talking in frame, as a beta. In Clyper, every clip is framed on whoever's talking and switches when the other person answers, and a stream gets its webcam stacked over the game.

  4. Captions in 50+ languages, and a score on every clip

Descript transcribes 25+ languages. Clyper captions 50+, word by word, in five animated styles placed clear of every app's buttons, and gives every clip a hook score, so you know which one to post first.

What it costs

Descript sells hours of media and AI credits: Hobbyist is 10 media hours a month, 1080p for $24, or $16 billed yearly. Create clips uses AI credits on top.

Clyper sells minutes of video for clips: Starter is 150 minutes for $20 a month; Pro is 400 for $38, or $19 billed yearly. If you also edit whole episodes, Descript's hours cover more than clips. If clips are the job, every one of Clyper's minutes goes to them, with nothing extra to buy.

Where Descript does more

Descript is a full editor. You cut a recording by editing its transcript, work on the same project as a team, and publish to YouTube and LinkedIn. Create clips lets you choose up to 20 clips, from 10 seconds to 5 minutes long, and there's a free plan.

Clyper doesn't try to be an editor. If you edit your show in Descript, keep doing that, and let Clyper make the clips once the episode is on YouTube.

Descript for the episode, Clyper for the clips

Edit the episode in Descript as you do now. When it's up on YouTube, paste its link into Clyper and get up to 30 clips back. Starter is $20 a month with no commitment. For what makes a podcast clip work, see how to clip a podcast into short videos.

Questions

Is Clyper better than Descript for making clips?

Yes, that's all it does: it takes a YouTube link, finds the moments, cuts them to whole sentences, frames them on whoever's talking, captions them in 50+ languages and scores their hooks, with nothing to set up. Descript is the better tool for editing whole episodes.

Can Descript make short clips?

Yes, with Create clips, one of its AI tools: you choose 1 to 20 clips, 10 seconds to 5 minutes long, and a portrait or square layout. It uses AI credits, and the clips open in Descript's editor.

Does Descript work with YouTube links?

Not for importing: Descript takes uploaded files, or files from Zoom and Google Drive. Clyper takes a YouTube link, or an upload.

Which is better for a podcast?

For editing the episode, Descript: it's a full editor. For turning the episode into clips to post, Clyper: it finds the moments, frames them on whoever's talking and captions them, with nothing to set up. You can use both.

Is there a free plan?

Descript has one: 1 hour of media, 720p, with a watermark. Clyper has no free plan; its Starter plan is $20 a month, billed monthly.
