How to make a GIF from a video

  1. Choose your video, or drop it on the player. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work.
  2. Pick the moment: drag the ends of the bar, type the times, or play it and press Now at the start and the end. Up to 15 seconds.
  3. Pick a size and smoothness, check the estimated file size, and press Make GIF. Then download it.

Size or smoothness

GIF is from 1987. Each frame holds at most 256 colors and is compressed on its own, while an MP4 mostly stores what changed since the last frame. That makes GIFs big: 4 seconds of the example above is about 3.1 MB as a 480 × 270 GIF at 15 frames a second, and about 150 KB as an MP4 of the same size, around 20 times smaller.

So keep GIFs short and small. The file grows with the picture's area and the number of frames, so a size down saves more than a step down in smoothness. For 4 seconds of a 16:9 video:

About how big 4 seconds of a 16:9 video is as a GIF, by size and frames a second
Size10 fps15 fps20 fps
Small, 320 × 180about 922 KBabout 1.4 MBabout 1.8 MB
Medium, 480 × 270about 2.1 MBabout 3.1 MBabout 4.1 MB
Large, 640 × 360about 3.7 MBabout 5.5 MBabout 7.4 MB

Footage with lots of detail or grain makes bigger GIFs than this; screen recordings and flat graphics much smaller ones.

Where GIFs work

Chats and comments. Discord, Slack, X and most forums and messaging apps play GIFs as they are. Discord's free upload limit is 20 MB a file, so check the estimate before you make a long one.

Not on TikTok, Reels or Shorts. Those apps are made for video with sound, so post an MP4 there: cut the moment with the video trimmer, make it 9:16 with the vertical video converter, and shrink it for anywhere with a size limit with the video compressor.

Picking the moment

A GIF has no sound, so the moment has to work without it: a reaction, a punchline you can see, a move. Start right before it happens and end right after, with nothing either side. The same instinct makes clips that people watch to the end; read how to make clips that go viral.

Questions

How do I turn a video into a GIF?

Choose the video, drag the ends of the bar to the moment you want (up to 15 seconds), pick a size and how smooth it should be, and press Make GIF. Check it plays right, then download it.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the video, makes the GIF and saves it, all on your device. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else.

How long can a GIF be?

Up to 15 seconds at a time here. Every second adds more frames and GIFs grow fast, so most good GIFs are 2 to 6 seconds: one reaction, one moment, one move.

How do I make a GIF smaller?

Use a shorter part, a smaller size or fewer frames a second. Halving the width makes the file about a quarter of the size, and 10 frames a second instead of 20 halves it. The converter shows the estimate before you make it.

Can I make a GIF from a YouTube video?

This turns video files on your device into GIFs, not links. For your own YouTube videos, download them from YouTube Studio and use them here. Saving other people's videos goes against YouTube's terms.

Is it free? Is there a watermark?

It's free, with no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many GIFs you make.

Turn the moments into clips

A GIF shows one moment. Paste a YouTube link and Clyper finds a video's best moments and makes each one a vertical clip with captions and sound: up to 30 clips per video.
