Clyper vs CapCut

Most clippers start in CapCut, and it's a great editor. But clipping in it means doing every step yourself: finding the moment, cutting it, cropping it to 9:16, captioning it, then starting again for the next one. Clyper does those steps for you. Paste a YouTube link and get up to 30 clips back, for about what CapCut Pro costs.

Our take

We make Clyper, so this is the case for it. What we say about CapCut comes from CapCut's own pages.

CapCut is free, and it can do almost anything to a video. The catch is that you're the one doing it. A clip by hand means watching for the moment, getting the file, cutting, reframing, captioning and fixing the captions, and that's one clip. Clyper does all of it from a link, so the time you'd spend in a timeline goes into posting more.

Keep CapCut for the edits only a person can make. Let Clyper make the clips.

Why clippers move from CapCut to Clyper

  1. One link instead of six steps a clip

To make one clip in CapCut:

    1. Watch the video to find the moment.
    2. Get the video file, since CapCut works from files, not YouTube links.
    3. Cut it to open on the hook and end on the payoff.
    4. Set the canvas to 9:16 and move the crop whenever the speaker moves.
    5. Generate captions, fix the words they got wrong and style them.
    6. Export it, then start again for the next clip.

In Clyper you paste the link once, and up to 30 clips come back cut to whole sentences, framed on whoever's talking, captioned word by word and scored.

  2. It starts from the YouTube link

CapCut's own Long video to shorts tool takes a file you upload, from your device, cloud storage, Google Drive or Dropbox. We didn't find a way to give it a YouTube link. For clippers, whose campaigns come as YouTube links, that's a download before every video. Clyper takes the link, public or unlisted, or a file if that's what you have.

  3. The best moments, found and ranked

Finding the moment is the slow part of clipping by hand. Clyper reads the whole video, picks the moments that work without the rest of it (as many as you ask for, up to 30 from one video) and gives each a hook score, so you know which to post first. CapCut doesn't score clips.

  4. No library licenses to check

CapCut's materials license says some of its built-in materials, its standard library of sounds included, may only be used for personal, non-commercial purposes. If campaigns pay you for your clips, you have to check the license of every sound, effect and template you add.

Clyper's clips are the video you gave it plus its captions, nothing from a library. You still need permission to post someone else's video, which clipping campaigns give.

Where CapCut does more

CapCut is a full editor: a timeline, effects, transitions, templates, music, and auto captions you can style by hand. It's free to start, exports up to 4K on Pro, shares straight to TikTok, Shorts and Reels, and has its own Long video to shorts tool for files you upload.

If you like adding effects, keep it for that. Clyper's clips are 1080 × 1920 MP4s with no watermark, so they open in CapCut like any other video. If all you need is a crop, the free vertical video converter makes any video 9:16 in your browser.

Questions

Is Clyper better than CapCut for clipping?

For making clips from long videos, yes: Clyper finds, cuts, frames, captions and scores them from a YouTube link, where in CapCut you do each step yourself. CapCut is the better editor for effects and edits made by hand.

Is CapCut free for clipping?

Its editor is free, and many clippers start there. Some features and materials need Pro: $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year at CapCut's US list prices, which vary by region and promotion.

Can CapCut make clips from a YouTube link?

Its Long video to shorts tool works from a file you upload, from your device, cloud storage, Google Drive or Dropbox. Clyper takes the YouTube link.

Can I use CapCut's music in clips for campaigns?

CapCut's materials license says its standard sounds are for personal entertainment and non-commercial purposes; commercial sounds are a separate library, and materials cleared for business use carry a commercial mark. Check the license of anything you add to a clip you're paid for.

Can I edit Clyper's clips in CapCut?

Yes. They're 1080 × 1920 MP4s with no watermark, so CapCut opens them like any other video.
