Speed up video

Speed a video up or slow it down, from 0.25× to 4×, and hear it at that speed before you make it. Voices keep their pitch, so faster doesn't mean squeaky. Works on audio too, and runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded.

Free, no watermark, nothing to sign up for. Videos up to 60 minutes at a time, sound files up to 3 hours.

How to speed up a video

  1. Choose your video or sound file, or drop it on the player. MP4, MOV, WebM, MP3 and WAV work.
  2. Pick a speed: a quick pick like 1.25×, 1.5× or 2×, or anywhere on the slider. Below 1× slows it down. A long video gets buttons that pick the speed to fit it into 60 seconds, 90 seconds or 3 minutes, when that's 2× or less.
  3. Play it to hear it at that speed. Leave Keep the voice's pitch on for natural voices.
  4. Press Speed it up (or Slow it down) and download the MP4, or an MP3 for a sound file.

Which speed to use

What each speed is good for, and how long a 90-second clip lasts at it
SpeedGood forA 90 s clip lasts
0.5×Slow motion for one moment: a trick, a goal, a reaction3:00
0.75×Following fast speech, or a step in a tutorial2:00
1.25×Tightening a slow talker without it sounding rushed1:12
1.5×Fitting a clip that runs a little long1:00
2×Skimming: a build, a walk, setting up0:45
4×A time-lapse feel: hours of work in minutes0:22

For talking videos, small changes go a long way: 1.1× to 1.25× tightens a slow talker, and much past 1.5× the speed starts to draw more attention than the words. Speeding up keeps every frame's order but shows fewer of them, so motion stays smooth up to the original frame rate. Slowing down shows each frame for longer, so it looks smoothest from footage filmed at 60 frames a second or more.

Faster, or tighter?

If a talking video drags, the pauses are often the problem, not the pace of the words. Cutting them out with the silence remover tightens it while every word stays at its natural speed; a gentle 1.1× or 1.25× on top finishes the job. To cut a long video down to the part worth keeping, use the video trimmer, and for how long a short video should run, read how long a short video should be.

Squeezing a whole long video into one Short at 2× rarely holds anyone. A few clips of its best moments do: each one a complete thought, cut on whole sentences.

Questions

How do I speed up a video?

Choose the video, pick a speed (1.25×, 1.5×, 2× or any speed on the slider) and play it to hear how it sounds. Then press Speed it up and download the MP4.

Will voices sound like chipmunks?

No. Keep the voice's pitch is on from the start, so a faster voice sounds like the same person talking quicker. Turn it off if you want the tape effect: higher when faster, lower when slower.

Can I slow a video down too?

Yes, down to 0.25×. A slowed video shows each frame for longer, so slow motion looks smoothest from footage filmed at a high frame rate, like 60 or 120 frames a second.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser plays it, changes its speed and saves the new file, all on your device. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else.

Can I change the speed of an audio file or a podcast?

Yes. Open an MP3, WAV or M4A and you get an MP3 back at the new speed. Sound files can be up to 3 hours long, videos up to 60 minutes at a time.

Is it free? Is there a watermark?

It's free, with no watermark and nothing to sign up for.
