MP4 converter

Turn MOV, MKV, WebM and other videos into MP4, several at once. When the picture and sound are already in formats MP4 holds, they're copied as they are: no quality lost, and quick even for hours of video. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

Converted on your device: nothing is uploaded.

Free, no watermark, nothing to sign up for. Copying has no length limit; up to 60 minutes of a video can be re-encoded at a time.

How to convert a video to MP4

  1. Drop your videos in, or choose them: up to 20 at once. Each shows what it holds and what will happen to it.
  2. Tick Make HEVC videos H.264 if they're from an iPhone and have to play on any PC.
  3. Press Convert to MP4. Copies are quick; anything re-encoded takes about as long as it plays.
  4. Download each MP4, or all of them at once. Files over 1 GB are saved straight to the place you choose.

What it copies, and what it re-encodes

A video file is a container (MOV, MKV, WebM, MP4) holding a picture and sound in their own formats. Changing the container is quick and lossless when the formats inside are ones MP4 holds; otherwise they have to be re-encoded.

What happens to common videos converted to MP4
VideoUsually holdsIn the MP4
MOV from an iPhoneHEVC or H.264, AAC soundCopied as it is (HEVC can be made H.264)
MKV from OBSH.264, AAC sound, one or more sound tracksCopied as it is, every sound track kept
MOV from OBS on a Mac, or a cameraH.264 or HEVC; AAC or PCM soundPicture copied; PCM sound re-encoded to AAC
WebM from a browser or screen recorderVP9 or VP8, Opus soundRe-encoded to H.264 and AAC
TS from a recorderH.264, AAC soundCopied as it is
ProRes MOVApple ProResCan't be converted in a browser

MP4 with H.264 and AAC plays on every phone, computer and browser, and every editor and app takes it. AVI, WMV and FLV files can't be opened in a browser at all.

MKV recordings from OBS

OBS used to record MKV by default, because a recording that's cut off (a crash, a full disk) stays playable, where an unfinished MP4 may not be. Since OBS 32.0, new profiles record Hybrid MP4 (Hybrid MOV on a Mac), which is just as safe, but profiles set up before then often still record MKV.

OBS can remux its own recordings too: File, then Remux Recordings, or Automatically remux to MP4 in the recording settings. This converter does the same for any MKV, on a computer without OBS, and several at once. Got a long stream? Cut it into parts with the video splitter, or see how to clip streams.

HEVC and H.264

iPhones record HEVC (also called H.265), which keeps the same quality in less space. Copied into an MP4 it plays on phones, Macs and most browsers, but some Windows PCs need Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions to play it, and some editors won't open it. Ticking Make HEVC videos H.264 re-encodes it to H.264, which plays everywhere, and makes the file bigger.

To record H.264 on an iPhone in the first place, go to Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. To make a big file smaller after converting, use the video compressor.

Questions

How do I convert MOV to MP4?

Drop the MOV file here and press Convert to MP4. An iPhone or camera MOV usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC sound, which is copied into the MP4 as it is, so it's quick and loses nothing.

How do I convert MKV to MP4?

Drop the MKV here and convert it. Recordings from OBS are usually H.264 with AAC sound, so they're copied into the MP4 without re-encoding, however long they are. Every sound track is kept, so separate tracks from OBS stay separate.

Does converting to MP4 lose quality?

Not when the picture and sound are copied, which is what happens with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC or MP3 sound. Other formats, like WebM's VP9 and Opus, are re-encoded to H.264 and AAC at high quality, which is close to the original but not identical.

Why won't my iPhone video play on Windows?

iPhones record HEVC (H.265) unless the camera is set to Most Compatible, and some Windows PCs can't play HEVC without Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions. Tick Make HEVC videos H.264 here and the MP4 plays everywhere.

Is there a file size limit?

No set limit, and up to 20 videos at a time. Files over 1 GB are written straight to your disk, which needs Chrome or Edge on a computer. Re-encoding works on up to 60 minutes of a video at a time; copying has no limit.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. They're converted in your browser, on your device, and saved straight to it. It's free, with no watermark and nothing to sign up for.
