YouTube banner maker

Make a 2560 × 1440 channel banner with your name inside the area every device shows. Preview it on a TV, a computer and a phone before you download it. Free, no watermark, and nothing is uploaded.

Keep your name and text inside the blue box (1544 × 423): YouTube says that part shows on every device. A computer shows the full width, 2560 × 423.

2560 × 1440, under YouTube's 6 MB limit. Made on your device: nothing is uploaded.

How to make a YouTube banner

  1. Type your channel's name, what you post and when. Put a word between *stars* to color it.
  2. Pick a background: a gradient, a color of your own, or an image you drag and zoom to frame. Darken an image so the words stand out.
  3. Choose a look and line it up left, center or right. The words always stay inside the safe area.
  4. Check it on each device with the previews, then download a JPG or PNG at 2560 × 1440, under 6 MB.
  5. Upload it in YouTube Studio: Customization, Profile, then Change under Banner image. Check the crop and publish.

YouTube banner size and safe area

YouTube's requirements for a channel banner
What YouTube asks for
Recommended size2560 × 1440 pixels, especially for TVs
Smallest size2048 × 1152 pixels
Shape16:9
Safe area for text and logos1235 × 338 at the smallest size; about 1544 × 423 at 2560 × 1440
File size6 MB or smaller
ExtrasNo shadows, borders or frames

The same image is used everywhere and cropped for each screen. A TV shows all of it. A computer shows the full width but only the middle band, about 2560 × 423 at 2560 × 1440, and less of the sides in a narrow window. YouTube doesn't publish what its phone app shows. So fill the whole image with the background, and keep everything people need to read in the middle.

The banner is one part of a channel's look. Each video needs a thumbnail too: make one with the YouTube thumbnail maker, or a 9:16 cover for a Short with the Shorts thumbnail maker.

What makes a good YouTube banner

Say what the channel is. Someone who lands on your channel from a Short or a search decides in a second or two whether to look further. Your name and a few words on what you post, like “Weeknight dinners in 20 minutes”, tell them faster than anything else on the page.

Say when you post, if you keep to it. “New videos every Tuesday” gives people a reason to subscribe now rather than later. If your schedule changes often, put your handle or your topic there instead.

Keep it simple and readable. On a phone, the banner is a small strip. One name, one line and plenty of contrast read at that size; a collage of photos and small text doesn't.

Match your thumbnails. The same colors and font on your banner and thumbnails make the channel look like one thing, and make your videos easier to spot in a feed.

Questions

What size is a YouTube banner?

YouTube recommends 2560 × 1440 pixels, especially for TVs, and takes nothing smaller than 2048 × 1152. Both are 16:9. The file has to be 6 MB or smaller.

What is the safe area on a YouTube banner?

The middle 1235 × 338 pixels of a 2048 × 1152 banner, or about 1544 × 423 of a 2560 × 1440 one. Every device shows that part, so your name, text and logo go there. The blue box in the preview is the safe area.

Why is my YouTube banner cut off?

Each device crops the same image differently. A TV shows all of it, a computer shows the full width but only the middle band (about 2560 × 423 at 2560 × 1440), and YouTube doesn't publish what its phone app shows. Anything outside the safe area is cut off somewhere.

How do I change my YouTube banner?

In YouTube Studio, open Customization, then Profile. Under Banner image, click Change and choose the image, check the crop on each device's preview, click Done, then Publish.

What should I put on my YouTube banner?

Your channel's name, a few words on what you post so a new visitor knows in a second, and when you post if you keep a schedule. Leave out borders and frames: YouTube asks for none.

Is the banner maker free?

Yes, with no watermark and nothing to sign up for. The banner is drawn in your browser and saved to your device at 2560 × 1440. Your image is never uploaded.
