How to make a video vertical

  1. Choose your video, or drop it on the phone. MP4, MOV and WebM work.
  2. Pick Crop or Fit. With Crop, drag the picture (or the slider) until what matters is in the frame.
  3. Choose the part to convert, up to 5 minutes, by dragging the ends of the bar or typing the times.
  4. Convert, then download your 1080 × 1920 MP4.

Crop or fit?

Crop fills the whole screen, which is what the apps are made for. From a 16:9 video it keeps a slice about 32% of the width: plenty for one person talking to the camera, as long as they stay in it.

Fit keeps the whole picture, on a blurred, darkened copy of itself. Nothing is cut, but a 16:9 picture fills only about 32% of the screen's height, so faces and text are small. Use it for wide shots, slides and screen recordings, or people sitting far apart.

When one crop isn't enough

A fixed crop works while the person in it stays put. When they lean out of the frame, or two people take turns talking, it shows the wrong person, or no one. By hand, the fix is cutting the video at every change and moving the crop each time.

Clyper does that for you: it finds who's talking in every shot, keeps them in the frame as they move and switches when someone else speaks. See how Clyper's auto reframe works, or framing the speakers in podcast clips.

What the apps take

TikTok, Reels and Shorts all fill the screen with a 9:16 video, and 1080 × 1920 is that shape in full HD. YouTube counts square and vertical videos of up to 3 minutes as Shorts. Instagram takes Reels of up to 20 minutes, but doesn't recommend Reels over 3 minutes to new audiences.

Instagram also shows Reels with borders or another app's watermark less often, and TikTok keeps clips showing someone else's watermark out of For You. The converter adds neither. Before you post, check your captions are clear of the apps' buttons with the safe zone checker.

Questions

How do I convert a 16:9 video to 9:16?

Choose the video in the converter, then Crop (it fills the screen; drag the picture to choose what stays in the frame) or Fit (the whole picture, on a blurred copy of itself), and convert. You get a 1080 × 1920 MP4 to post on TikTok, Reels or Shorts.

Is it free? Is there a watermark?

It's free, with no watermark and nothing to sign up for.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads it, converts it and saves the new file, all on your device. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else.

How long can the video be?

You can open a video of any length, and each conversion takes up to 5 minutes of it: more than the 3 minutes YouTube counts as a Short. For a longer part, convert it in pieces.

Which browsers can convert?

Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari make MP4 files. A browser that can't make MP4s makes a WebM file instead, which YouTube and TikTok take. Long videos convert faster on a computer than on a phone.

Why does my video look blurry after converting?

A vertical crop keeps only part of the picture and enlarges it to 1080 × 1920. From a 720p video that's almost three times larger, which looks soft. Start from the sharpest copy you have: 1080p or 4K.

Can the crop follow the person talking?

Not here: the converter keeps the same crop for the whole video. Clyper's clips follow whoever's talking, switch between speakers and add captions, from a YouTube link or an upload.

Clips that follow the speaker

Paste a YouTube link and Clyper finds the best moments, keeps whoever's talking in the frame as they move, and captions every word: up to 30 vertical clips per video.
