Add text to video

Put a title, a hook or a label on a video in the styles short clips use, and drag it into place on a preview that shows where TikTok, Reels and Shorts' buttons go. Keep the video's shape or make it 9:16. It runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded.

How to add text to a video

  1. Choose your video, or drop it on the preview. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work.
  2. Type your text and pick a style: Box, Outline, Shadow or Highlight, in any of the colors, with a font, size and alignment. Press Enter for a new line.
  3. Drag it into place on the preview, or press Top, Middle or Bottom. Set when it shows if it shouldn't stay for the whole video, and add more texts the same way.
  4. Choose the shape: as it is, or 9:16 cropped, fitted on a blurred copy, or on black with room for a title. Then press Add text to video and download the MP4, sound and all.

Which text style to use

The styles, what they look like and what they suit
StyleLooks likeGood for
BoxDark letters on a rounded white (or colored) boxA title or hook at the top of a clip: readable on any picture
OutlineLetters with a thick outlineShort, punchy words over busy footage, the classic meme look
ShadowLetters with a soft shadow behind themA quiet label or a name over a calm picture
HighlightEach line on its own band of colorTwo or three lines of text, like the apps' own text tool

On a phone, big and short beats small and long: a few words people read in a second, in a size that's still clear on a small screen. For opening lines that make people stay, try the hook generator or read how to write hooks for short videos.

Where to put text on a vertical video

TikTok, Reels and Shorts cover part of every video with their own buttons and text: the tabs or search at the top, the like, comment and share buttons down the right, and the username, caption and sound along the bottom. On a 1080 × 1920 video that's roughly the top 240 pixels, the bottom 420 and the right 200 on the busiest of the three.

Text in those places gets hidden. With a 9:16 shape, the preview shades them red, so a title near the top of the clear area and nothing important behind the buttons stays readable everywhere. To check a finished clip, use the safe zone checker. To put your @handle or logo on a clip, see-through and in a corner, use the watermark maker.

Text, or captions?

Text is something you write once: a title, a hook, a label, a call to follow. Captions are every word that's said, timed to the speech, so a talking clip still makes sense with the sound off. Most clips use both. For captions, the auto caption generator turns speech into timed captions and add captions to video burns them in word by word.

The slow part of a clip is neither: it's finding the moment in a long video, cutting it cleanly and framing it for a phone. That's what Clyper does for you.

Questions

How do I add text to a video?

Choose the video, type your text, pick a style and drag it where you want it on the preview. Choose the shape (as it is, or 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts), then press Add text to video and download the MP4.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser draws the text onto every frame and saves the new file on your device. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else.

Can I add more than one text, or show text for only part of the video?

Yes. Add up to 6 texts, each with its own style, size and place. Each shows for the whole video, or from and to the times you set, so a title can show for the first few seconds and a label later.

Will TikTok's buttons cover my text?

Not if you keep it out of the red. On a 9:16 video the preview shades where TikTok, Reels and Shorts put their buttons, username and caption, so you can place the text where it stays visible on all three.

Can I put a title above the video, like clip pages do?

Yes. Choose 9:16 on black: the video sits in the middle of a vertical frame with black above and below, and your title goes in the space at the top.

Is it free? Is there a watermark?

It's free, with no watermark and nothing to sign up for. It works on up to 30 minutes of video at a time.
