How to compress a video
- Choose your video, or drop it on the page. MP4, MOV and WebM work, from a phone, a camera or a screen recording.
- Pick a size: Discord's 20 MB, 25 MB for an email, 10 MB, half the size, or any number of megabytes.
- Compress, then download the MP4. The estimate shows the size and the picture you'll get before you start.
Only need it as an MP4, not smaller? The MP4 converter changes MOV, MKV and WebM to MP4, copying the picture and sound as they are when it can, so nothing is lost.
How it fits a video to a size
A video's file size is its bitrate times its length. So the compressor starts from the size you want and the video's length, and works back to the bitrate that fits, leaving a little room for the file itself and keeping the sound at a clear 128 kbps (64 kbps when space is tight).
Then it picks the picture size. Squeezing a 4K picture into a small bitrate looks worse than a sharp 720p one, so when there aren't enough bits for every pixel, it steps the picture down to the largest size the bitrate can fill cleanly. The encoder lands near the bitrate rather than on it, so if the file comes out over your size, it runs again a little lower.
Sizes worth knowing
- Discord: 20 MB per file without Nitro, since August 2026 (it was 10 MB before). Nitro Basic takes 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB.
- Email: Gmail attaches files up to 25 MB; past that, it adds a Google Drive link instead.
- TikTok, Reels and Shorts: they take files far larger than this, so there's no need to compress for them. Check a video against what they take with the video size checker.
When the video is too long to send
If a long video won't fit, the best part of it usually will. Cut that part out with the video trimmer, or let Clyper find the best moments of a long video for you and make each one a vertical clip with captions, ready for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Questions
How do I compress a video for Discord?
Choose the video, pick Discord (20 MB, the free upload limit) and press Compress video. The compressor works out the bitrate that fits in 20 MB for your video's length, makes the picture smaller if it needs to, and gives you an MP4 to upload.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser reads it, compresses it and saves the new file, all on your device. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else.
Will it lose quality?
A smaller file always keeps less detail, but how much you notice depends on the size you ask for. The compressor keeps the picture as large as the size allows and scales it down only when that looks cleaner than squeezing every pixel. A bigger target keeps more.
Why won't my video fit?
Every size holds only so many minutes before the picture falls apart: a long video squeezed into a few megabytes is mostly blocks. When that happens, the compressor tells you how much fits. Pick a bigger target, or cut the video down first with the video trimmer.
Is it free? Is there a watermark?
It's free, with no watermark and nothing to sign up for.
Which browsers can compress video?
Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari make MP4 files. A browser that can't make MP4s makes a WebM instead. Long videos compress faster on a computer than on a phone.
