Remove background noise from video

Take the fan, the hum, the traffic and the room out of a video's sound, and keep the voice. It works on sound files too, runs on your device with an open-source noise suppressor, and copies the picture as it is.

Fans, hum, traffic and room noise out; the voice stays.

Strength

Made for voices. It keeps speech and lowers everything else, music too, so it's for talking videos, not music videos.

MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, or MP3, M4A and WAV. It's cleaned on your device: nothing is uploaded.

Free, no watermark, nothing to sign up for. Videos up to 60 minutes at a time, sound files up to 3 hours.

How to remove background noise from a video

  1. Choose the video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV) or a sound file (MP3, M4A, WAV and more), or drop it on the box above.
  2. Pick a strength. Medium takes most noise out and keeps voices natural. Light leaves a little of the room in; Strong takes out as much as it can, for loud noise.
  3. Press Remove the noise. The sound goes through RNNoise 10 milliseconds at a time, on your device, while the picture is copied as it is.
  4. Compare and download. Play it and switch between Before and After to hear the difference, then download the MP4 (or MP3 for a sound file).

What it can and can't take out

RNNoise is a small neural network trained on speech and on many kinds of noise. It listens to each slice of sound, works out which parts are a voice, and turns the rest down. That makes it good at some noise and no help with other problems:

How well the noise remover handles each kind of noise
The noiseHow it doesWhat helps
Fans, air conditioning, computer humTakes most of it outMedium is usually enough
Traffic, rain, wind on a windowLowered a lot; sudden bursts less soStrong for a busy street
Keyboard clicks, a mouse, knocksSoftened between words, not under themStrong, or a mic further from the desk
Voices or a TV in the backgroundLowered, but a voice is a voiceRecord away from them
Music under the voiceTurned down with the noise, can sound wateryNot for music videos
Echo in a big, bare roomStays as it isSoft things in the room, the mic closer
A distorted, clipped voiceCan't be fixed after recordingRecord again with the level lower

If the voice starts to sound thin or underwater, go down a strength: Light keeps 25% of the original sound under the cleaned one, so it never sounds hollow.

Recording with less noise to begin with

  • Get the mic close. A mic a hand's width from your mouth hears your voice far louder than the room. A clip-on mic or your phone held close beats a camera across the room.
  • Turn off what hums: fans, air conditioning, a fridge nearby, notifications.
  • Soften the room. Curtains, a rug, a sofa and shelves of books cut echo. This noise remover leaves echo in, and the tools that do try only reduce it.
  • Record a few seconds of quiet before you start, and check the sound before a long take.

For the rest of the clean-up, the silence remover cuts the pauses, the video volume booster brings a quiet recording up to the level of everything else in the feed, the bleep censor bleeps the swearing, and the video to MP3 converter saves the cleaned sound on its own for a podcast feed. From clean sound to clips

Clean sound matters most on a phone: people watch Shorts and Reels in noisy places, often with the sound low, and a voice they have to strain to hear is a reason to scroll. Captions help as much as the clean-up, and they're where most of the time goes.

Clyper does that part for a long video: paste its YouTube link or upload it, and it finds the moments worth posting, cuts each one on whole sentences, frames it vertically on whoever's talking and captions every word. See podcast clips for how it handles a conversation.

Questions

How do I remove background noise from a video for free?

Choose the video here, pick a strength (Medium suits most videos) and press Remove the noise. It's cleaned on your device in a minute or two, and you download the same video with the noise taken out: no watermark, nothing to sign up for.

Does it change the picture?

No. Only the sound is re-encoded; the picture is copied into the new file exactly as it was, so the quality, size and frame rate stay the same and the voice stays in sync.

What noise can it take out?

Steady noise goes best: fans, air conditioning, computer hum, traffic, rain, a room's hiss. It also lowers chatter far away, and softens keyboard clicks and knocks between words, though less than steady noise. It can't fix a voice that's distorted, heavy echo in a big room, or two people talking over each other.

Will it remove music from a video?

It lowers music along with other noise, since it's made to keep only voices, but it isn't a music remover. Music under a voice comes out quieter and can sound watery, so it's not for music videos.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. RNNoise, the open-source noise suppressor it uses, runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. Nothing is sent to us.

How long a video can it clean?

Videos up to 60 minutes and sound files up to 3 hours at a time. It works faster than the video plays: most take a minute or two. For something longer, cut it into parts with the video splitter first.

Clean video in, clips out

Paste a YouTube link and Clyper finds the moments worth posting, cuts each one on whole sentences, frames it vertically and captions every word: up to 30 clips per video.
