Aspect ratio calculator

Put in a width and height to get the aspect ratio, work out a new size at the same ratio, and see the crop that makes it 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5.

Change its shape

For TikTok, Reels and Shorts, crop the middle 608 × 1080, then scale it to 1080 × 1920. That keeps 32% of the picture.

Common ratios: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, 3:4, 3:2, 2:3, 5:4, 16:10, 21:9, 1.91:1. Sizes are rounded to whole, even pixels, which video needs.

How aspect ratio works

An aspect ratio is a picture's width compared with its height. 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 are different sizes with the same shape, 16:9, because both reduce to 16 by 9.

To resize without stretching, keep the ratio: new height = new width × height ÷ width. A 1920 × 1080 video at 1280 wide is 1280 × 1080 ÷ 1920 = 720 high. Video needs both sides to be even numbers, so round to the nearest even pixel.

Turning 16:9 into 9:16

A 9:16 crop of a 1920 × 1080 video is 608 × 1080: it keeps the middle 32% of the picture. That works when what matters is in the middle. When it isn't, like two people talking at opposite sides of a podcast set, a fixed crop cuts one of them off, and the crop has to move with whoever is speaking.

Crop or fit any video to 9:16 with the vertical video converter, check a video against each app with the video size checker, or read video sizes for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.

Questions

How do you work out an aspect ratio?

Divide the width and the height by the biggest number that goes into both. 1920 and 1080 are both divisible by 120, which leaves 16 and 9: 16:9. Or divide the width by the height for one number, 1.78:1.

What sizes are 16:9?

1280 × 720 (720p), 1920 × 1080 (1080p), 2560 × 1440 (1440p) and 3840 × 2160 (4K) are the common ones. Any width times 9 ÷ 16 gives the height.

What aspect ratio are TikTok, Reels and Shorts?

9:16, vertical, at 1080 × 1920 pixels. That fills a phone's screen. A 16:9 video posted as it is shows as a band across the middle.

What is a 4:5 aspect ratio?

A portrait shape a little taller than square: 1080 × 1350 pixels. It's a common size for Instagram and Facebook feed posts because it takes up more of the feed than a square or a landscape post.

How do I change a video's aspect ratio?

Crop it, which keeps part of the picture at full size, or fit it inside the new shape with bars or a blurred copy behind it, which keeps all of the picture smaller. The vertical video converter does both for 9:16.

Is 1366 × 768 16:9?

Almost. It's 683:384 in whole numbers, 1.779:1 against 16:9's 1.778:1, so it's treated as 16:9. The calculator shows a size like this as about 16:9.
