Remove audio from video

Take the sound out of a video and keep the picture exactly as it is. It takes seconds, even for long videos, because nothing is re-encoded, and your video never leaves your device.

An example: 8 seconds of IMPAULSIVE

MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, or drop one on the player. Nothing is uploaded.

The picture isn't re-encoded, so it's quick and loses no quality.

How to remove audio from a video

  1. Choose your video, or drop it on the player. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work.
  2. Press Remove audio. The sound track is left out and the picture copied as it is.
  3. Play it to check, then download it.

Why it's quick, and loses nothing

A video file holds the picture and the sound as separate tracks. Most tools that mute a video decode the whole picture and encode it again, which takes as long as the video and costs some quality each time. This one copies the picture track untouched and leaves the sound track out, so a long video takes seconds and every frame is the same as before.

When to take the sound out

Music you don't have the rights to. TikTok, Instagram and YouTube check uploads for music. A video with a track that isn't licensed can be muted, blocked in some countries, or have its earnings go to the music's owner. Take the sound out and add a track from the app's own library when you post, or one you're allowed to use with add music to video. For what clips can use, read is clipping legal.

Noise, or a voiceover. When the noise drowns the talking, mute the clip and record what you want to say over it. When it's a steady fan, hum or traffic under a clear voice, keep the voice and take the noise out with the background noise remover.

Background video on a website. A video that plays silently behind a page is smaller without a sound track it never plays. Make it smaller still with the video compressor.

Posting it silent? Add captions

Plenty of people scroll with the sound off, and a clip with no sound has to say everything on screen. Word-by-word captions keep people reading, and watching. Put them on with add captions to video, or read how to caption short videos.

Questions

How do I remove the audio from a video?

Choose the video, press Remove audio, and download the result. It's the same video with its sound track taken out, so it plays silently everywhere.

Does removing the sound lower the quality?

No. The picture is copied exactly as it is, frame for frame, without being encoded again. Only the sound track is left out, so the file also gets a little smaller.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the video and writes the silent copy on your device. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else.

Which formats does it take?

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. You get an MP4 back, or a WebM for VP8 and VP9 videos, which MP4 can't hold. The picture's format doesn't change.

Can I replace the sound instead?

Not here: it removes all of it. To put music under a silent video, add it from TikTok's, Instagram's or YouTube's own library when you post: those tracks are licensed for use in the app.

Is it free?

Yes, with no watermark and nothing to sign up for.
