Clyper vs Captions

Captions is an AI video app for making and editing videos, and its Clips tool turns a long video into a batch of short ones. Clyper is built only for clips. Paste a YouTube link up to 4 hours long, choose how many clips you want, and get them cut to whole sentences, framed on whoever's talking, captioned and scored, for $20 a month on Starter.

Our take

We make Clyper, so this is our case for it. What we say about Captions comes from its own pricing page and help center, linked at the bottom.

If clips are the job, we'd pick Clyper. In Captions, Clips is one tool in an app built around AI actors, AI editing and dubbing, and it comes with the Max plan and up. Clyper is only clips: you paste the link, up to 4 hours long, choose how many you want or leave it on Auto, and they come back ready to post. Month to month, it costs less to start.

Captions is the one to look at if you also make videos with AI actors or a digital twin of yourself, or dub them into other languages.

Why clippers pick Clyper over Captions

  1. Built for clips, priced for clips

Captions' first plan with Clips is Max, at $24.99 a month, and that price also covers AI actors, digital twins, AI video and a chat-based editor, with 500 AI credits for its generative tools. Clyper Starter is $20 a month for 150 minutes of video, up to 75 clips, and on every plan a credit is a minute of video, however many clips it makes.

  2. Videos up to 4 hours

Captions' help center limits Clips to videos up to 3 hours (10 GB as a file). Clyper takes YouTube links and uploads from a minute to 4 hours long, so a podcast or a stream replay that runs past three hours goes in whole, and Studio takes 10 links at once.

Clipping someone else's video still needs their permission, which clipping campaigns give.

  3. You choose how many clips

Captions' FAQ says the number of clips you get depends on how long the video is and how many strong moments it has. On Clyper you choose: up to 30 clips a video, or leave it on Auto and it works the number out. Each runs 20 to 60 seconds and starts and ends on a whole sentence, so nothing opens mid-thought.

  4. Ready to post as they come

Every Clyper clip follows whoever's talking and cuts to the other person when they answer, and a stream gets its webcam stacked over the game. Its captions go on word by word in 50+ languages, in 5 animated styles placed where TikTok's, Reels' and Shorts' buttons won't cover them, and each clip gets a hook score so you know which to post first. If one needs a nudge, trim it, extend either end by up to 15 seconds or fix a word.

What it costs

Captions sells subscriptions with AI credits. Clips comes with Max, at $24.99 a month with 500 credits, and with the Frontier plans: $69.99 for 1,400 credits, $139.99 for 2,800 and $279.99 for 5,600. Its pricing page gives these as its iOS prices in US dollars, says a yearly plan is billed upfront at a discount without listing that price, and shows a free plan without Clips. Its credits page lists what its generative tools cost, but not Clips.

Clyper sells minutes of video for clips: Starter is 150 minutes for $20 a month, up to 75 clips; Pro is 400 minutes, up to 200 clips, for $38, or $19 billed yearly. Month to month, Clyper costs less to start, $20 against $24.99 for Max, and every minute goes to clips rather than to avatars or AI video.

Where Captions does more

Captions does a lot beyond clips. It generates talking videos from a script with AI actors or a digital twin of you, edits a whole video in one of its AI Edit styles, dubs speech into 30+ languages in a clone of your voice, corrects eye contact, removes backgrounds and noise, and generates B-roll, music, sound effects and images. It has a camera with a teleprompter, apps for iOS and Android, and publishes to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Its Clips can erase elements burned into the footage, lay out a gaming facecam, keep clips horizontal and take a prompt for more, and there's a free plan for basic editing.

Clyper doesn't try to do all that. It makes clips, as 1080 × 1920 MP4s with no watermark, so you can open one in Captions or any other editor when you want more.

Clyper for the clips, Captions for the rest

  1. Clip in Clyper. Paste a video you've already clipped in Captions, same link, and see the two side by side. Starter is $20 a month, and you can cancel whenever you like.
  2. Choose how many clips. Up to 30 a video, or Auto. Each comes captioned, framed and scored.
  3. Keep Captions for what else you make. AI actors, dubbing and AI Edit styles stay where they are. For what makes a clip worth posting, see how to clip a podcast into short videos.

Questions

Is Clyper better than Captions for clips?

For clipping, we think so: it's built only for clips. Paste a YouTube link up to 4 hours long, choose how many clips you want, and they come back cut to whole sentences, framed on whoever's talking, captioned clear of every app's buttons and scored, for $20 a month on Starter. Captions does more if you also make videos with AI actors or dub them.

Can Captions make clips from a YouTube video?

Yes, with Clips, on its Max plan and up: paste a YouTube or other public video link, or upload a file up to 3 hours and 10 GB, and it returns a ranked batch of clips. Clyper takes YouTube links and uploads up to 4 hours long, and you choose how many clips you get.

How much does Captions cost?

Max, its first plan with Clips, is $24.99 a month with 500 AI credits; Frontier is $69.99 with 1,400, and its 2x and 4x tiers are $139.99 and $279.99. Its pricing page gives these as iOS prices in US dollars and says yearly plans cost less, without listing them. The free plan doesn't include Clips.

Which is better for clipping campaigns?

Clyper. It's built for them: it takes any public YouTube link, cuts clips that stand on their own, captions them clear of every app's buttons and scores their hooks, and Studio takes 10 links at once.

Does Clyper have a free plan?

No. Starter is $20 a month, billed monthly, so a month is enough to see what it makes of your videos. Captions has a free plan for basic editing, but its Clips starts with Max, at $24.99 a month.
