How to get more views on YouTube Shorts

YouTube has said plainly how it picks which Shorts to show: whether people choose to watch, how long they stay, and whether they liked it. Here's how that works, how views are counted since August 2026, and what gets a Short watched, from the first second to the last.

In short

  • YouTube looks at how many people choose to watch a Short rather than swipe, how long they watch and how much of it they see.
  • Since August 24, 2026, a view counts from the first frame; an engaged view means watching past the first few seconds, and that's what earns.
  • Win the first second, keep to one idea, caption every word and cut everything that isn't the point.
  • Post your own edits: since October 2026, channels that mostly re-upload others' videos get less reach in the Shorts feed.

How YouTube decides which Shorts to show

YouTube's own help pages describe three questions it asks of every Short it recommends:

  1. Do people choose to watch it, or ignore it, or tap “not interested”? It counts the share of viewers who chose to view.
  2. Do they stick around? It looks at the average view duration and the average share of the Short that people watch.
  3. Did they enjoy it? It looks at likes and the answers to its post-watch surveys.

Everything below is about those three: the swipe, the staying, and the feeling at the end.

How views are counted now

Since August 24, 2026, YouTube counts a view on any video, Shorts included, from its first frame. Watching past the first few seconds is an engaged view, which is what YouTube Analytics mostly reports, what Shorts earnings are based on, and how you can tell whether people chose to stay. Joining the YouTube Partner Program is judged on qualified views.

So a big view count with few engaged views means people saw the Short and swiped. That's the number to fix first.

Win the swipe

  • Open on the point. Start on the most surprising line, not the setup before it. People decide fast whether to stay.
  • Make it readable with the sound off. Captions on every word, big enough to read on a phone. See how to caption short videos.
  • Fill the screen. A 9:16 frame with the speaker in it, not a horizontal video with bars. The free vertical video converter fixes one.

Stuck on an opening line? The hook generator has formulas that work. Posting the same clips to TikTok and Reels too? See how to get more views on TikTok and on Instagram Reels. Starting from scratch? How to make YouTube Shorts goes step by step.

Hold them to the end

  • One idea per Short. A Short that tries to say three things loses people at the second.
  • Cut the air. Pauses, filler, the laugh after the joke: each is a moment to swipe.
  • End on the payoff. Finish on the line that lands, not on the trailing “so yeah”. Replays don't count as engaged views, so earn the watch, don't loop for it.
  • Keep it as long as it needs. Shorts can run to 3 minutes, but most that work are well under one. See how long a Short should be.

Make it yours

In October 2026, YouTube said it's putting original content first in the Shorts feed: channels that mostly aggregate or re-upload other creators' videos without significant changes will likely see less distribution. It asks for real value instead: your own commentary, edits or storytelling, not small technical changes.

Clipping your own videos is fine: YouTube says you won't be penalized for using your own content in a clip or a Short. Clipping someone else's needs their permission, and your own cut, framing and captions. See is clipping legal?

Thumbnails, titles and links

  • A thumbnail where it shows. Since July 2026, YouTube has been letting creators upload custom thumbnails for Shorts in YouTube Studio on a computer, starting with Partner Program creators; in the app you can pick a frame. Make one with the free Shorts thumbnail maker; the steps are in how to change a Shorts thumbnail.
  • A title that says what it is. It shows under the Short and in search.
  • A link to the long video. If the Short comes from one of your videos, set it as the Short's related video in YouTube Studio (it needs advanced features turned on), so viewers can tap through to the rest.

Post enough to learn

YouTube says there's no minimum posting schedule to do well. But each Short is a test: of a moment, an opening line, a length. The more you post, the sooner you learn which ones people choose and stay for, so post as often as you can keep the quality up. When you post matters less than how often; see the best time to post for what the studies found.

Clyper makes the testing cheap: paste a long video's link and get up to 30 Shorts of its best moments, each opening on its hook, framed and captioned, with a hook score to tell you which to post first.

Questions

How does the YouTube Shorts algorithm work?

YouTube says it looks at whether people choose to watch a Short or swipe past it, how long they watch and how much of it they see, and whether they liked it, from likes and surveys.

What counts as a view on YouTube Shorts?

Since August 24, 2026, a view counts from the first frame. An engaged view is when someone watches past the first few seconds; Shorts earnings are based on engaged views.

How often should I post Shorts?

YouTube says there's no minimum posting schedule. Post as often as you can keep the quality up: each Short teaches you what people stay for.

Why did my Shorts views drop?

Look at Stayed to watch first: if fewer people stay past the first seconds, the opening needs work. If your channel mostly re-uploads other creators' videos, YouTube said in October 2026 that such channels will likely see less distribution in the Shorts feed.

Can I add a custom thumbnail to a Short?

Yes, in YouTube Studio on a computer: YouTube started rolling it out to Partner Program creators in July 2026. In the YouTube app, you can pick a frame of the Short.
