How to get more views on TikTok in 2026

TikTok has said a fair amount about how its For You feed picks videos, and its Community Guidelines list what it won't recommend at all. Here's what it says, what keeps a video out of the feed, and what gets people to stop, stay and come back, from the first seconds to how often you post.

In short

  • TikTok recommends videos by how viewers interact with them. Watching a longer video to the end is one of the strongest signals; follower count isn't a direct factor.
  • Reused clips with no creative edits, clips showing someone else's watermark or logo, and minimally edited posts are ineligible for the For You feed.
  • Open on the point, caption every word, cut until people stay to the end, and say what the video is about in words people search for.
  • Post often and read TikTok Studio's analytics: retention shows where people leave, and traffic sources show whether the For You feed or search found you.

How TikTok decides who sees a video

TikTok explained its For You feed in a 2020 post that still describes it well. It recommends videos from three kinds of information, weighted differently:

  • How people interact, which matters most: the videos they like or share, the accounts they follow, the comments they post and the videos they make.
  • Information about the video, like its captions, sounds and hashtags.
  • Device and account settings, like language and country, which count for less.

Within those, a strong signal counts for more than a weak one. TikTok's own example of a strong one is “whether a user finishes watching a longer video from beginning to end”. It also says “neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos are direct factors”, so a new account's video can still reach the For You feed.

TikTok's 2026 Community Guidelines describe the same system in fewer words: it looks at “what you like, share, comment on, and search for, as well as what's trending.” And it mixes things up on purpose: the feed generally won't show two videos in a row from the same creator or with the same sound, and it avoids duplicated content and videos someone has already seen.

What keeps a video out of the For You feed

TikTok's Community Guidelines mark some content “FYF Ineligible”: it stays on TikTok, but it won't be recommended in the For You feed. Some of those rules hit clips and reposts directly:

TikTok's For You feed rules that affect clips, and what they mean in practice
What TikTok saysWhat it means for you
“Reused or unoriginal content posted without creative edits”A clip posted as you found it doesn't get recommended. Make your own cut, framing and captions.
“Clips that show someone else’s watermark or logo”Never post a download from another app with its watermark on it. Export a clean file of your own edit.
“Low-quality or minimally edited content, such as short clips made from GIFs only”A looped GIF or a few seconds with nothing added won't travel. Post a real moment with sound and a point.
Services or tools that artificially boost engagementBought views, likes or automation can get an account banned, or restricted with limits on posting, top search results and the For You feed. TikTok also removes fake likes and followers.

A video that isn't in the For You feed can still be found through search or on your profile. TikTok also says a video with few views hasn't necessarily broken a rule, and that its analytics show whether any of your videos were made ineligible for recommendation. Check there before you change anything else.

Win the first seconds

Every view starts with someone deciding whether to keep watching. For Creator Rewards, TikTok only counts a view once it has been watched for at least 5 seconds, so those first seconds decide whether a view counts at all.

  • Start on the point. The surprising line, the question or the result goes first. Cut the greeting, the setup and the breath before it.
  • Give people a reason to stay. An open question, a claim that needs backing up, or a story that has just started. The hook generator has opening lines built on formulas that do this, and hook examples sorts them by type.
  • Make it work with the sound off. Caption every word, big and high-contrast, so someone scrolling in silence can follow from the first frame.
  • Keep words clear of the buttons. TikTok's caption, username and buttons cover the bottom and right of the screen. Check your text and faces with the safe zone checker.

Keep them watching to the end

Since finishing a video is one of the strongest signals TikTok has, most of the work of getting views is cutting until people stay. TikTok Studio shows three numbers for each video that tell you whether they do:

  • Retention rate: how much of the video people watched. The graph shows the moment they leave, and TikTok suggests looking at what was on screen at each drop-off.
  • Average watch time: how long people stayed, on average.
  • Watched full video: the share of people who reached the last few seconds. TikTok notes it moves with the video's length, so compare videos of similar length.

Where people drop off, cut. One idea per video, no pauses or filler, and end on the payoff instead of trailing off after it. The same habits work on every app; for clips in particular, see how to make clips that go viral.

How long to make it

A shorter video is easier to finish; a longer one holds more of the story. Which matters more depends on what you're after:

  • For reach, make it as long as the moment needs and no longer. A tight 30 seconds that people finish beats a loose minute they leave.
  • For Creator Rewards, videos have to be at least a minute long, and original. TikTok pays on qualified views, which creators report at about $0.40 to $1.00 per 1,000. See how much TikTok pays, or try your numbers in the TikTok money calculator.

Say what it's about, in words people search

TikTok reads a video's captions, sounds and hashtags to work out who it's for, and plenty of people now search TikTok the way they'd search the web. So say plainly what the video is about:

  • Write a caption with the words people would search for, like the person's name, the topic and the question it answers, not just an emoji or a joke.
  • Put the topic on screen in the first seconds too, as a line of text or in the captions.
  • Add a few hashtags that describe it, rather than a long list of popular ones that don't.
  • Keep the sound clear. TikTok counts sounds as part of a video's information. In a talking clip the speech is the point, so make sure it's loud and clean before adding anything under it.

Post often, and read what happened

Each video is another chance to reach people who'll watch it. In a 2025 study of 11.4 million TikTok posts by Buffer, a scheduling tool, accounts got 17% more views per post at 2 to 5 posts a week than at one, and 34% more at 11 or more. The typical post didn't change much; the best ones did better. For the numbers and when to post, see the best time to post on TikTok, Reels and Shorts.

Then use TikTok Studio's analytics to decide what to make next:

  • Traffic source shows how people found your videos, and search queries show what they searched for to get there.
  • Your top posts ranks your best videos by views, likes, new viewers and new followers. Make more of whatever they share.
  • Most active times shows when your viewers were on TikTok over the last 7 days.

Why clippers post several clips of one video

A long video holds many moments that can each stand on their own, and you can't know in advance which one people will finish, share and search for. So clippers post several clips of the same video, each opening on a different hook, and let the views decide.

  • Make each clip different. TikTok avoids duplicated content, so post different moments, not the same clip twice.
  • Spread them out. The feed rarely shows two videos in a row from the same creator, so space clips across the day and the week rather than posting them all at once.
  • Make them yours. Your cut, vertical framing and captions are the creative edits that keep clips eligible for the For You feed, and a campaign or the creator's permission is what lets you post them.

YouTube judges Shorts in a similar way; see how to get more views on YouTube Shorts for its side, how to get more views on Instagram Reels for Instagram's, and TikTok vs Reels vs Shorts for how the three compare.

Questions

How does the TikTok algorithm decide who sees my video?

TikTok says it recommends videos mostly by how people interact with them (likes, shares, comments, follows and how much they watch), then by information about the video like captions, sounds and hashtags, and least by settings like language and country. Finishing a longer video is one of the strongest signals.

Why are my TikTok views so low?

First check TikTok Studio's analytics: it shows whether a video was made ineligible for the For You feed. If it wasn't, look at the retention graph. Most low-view videos lose people in the first seconds, so start on the point and caption every word.

Do you need followers to get views on TikTok?

No. TikTok says follower count and past hits aren't direct factors in what it recommends. An account with more followers usually gets more views because more people already watch it, but a new account's video can still reach the For You feed.

Can I post clips of other people's videos on TikTok?

Only with the rights to: a clipping campaign or the creator's permission. Even then, TikTok won't recommend reused clips posted without creative edits or clips showing someone else's watermark, so make your own cut, framing and captions.

How long should a TikTok be to get views?

As long as the moment needs: people finishing the video matters more than its length. Videos for Creator Rewards have to be at least a minute long, so tighten a minute-long video rather than padding a short one.

Do hashtags help on TikTok?

A few that describe the video do: TikTok reads captions, sounds and hashtags to work out who a video is for. Words people actually search for, in the caption and on screen, help it show up in TikTok Search too.
