How to change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail (and make a good one)

Yes, you can change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail: upload your own image in YouTube Studio on a computer, or pick a frame of the Short in the YouTube app. Here's who can upload a custom thumbnail for Shorts, the steps on a computer and on a phone, the size to make it, where Shorts thumbnails show, and what makes a cover people tap, on TikTok and Reels too.

In short

  • In YouTube Studio on a computer, open the Short under Content, then Shorts, and upload an image under Thumbnail. YouTube announced custom Shorts thumbnails on July 24, 2026, starting with Partner Program creators; your account must be verified.
  • In the YouTube app you can only pick a frame of the Short, while you upload it or afterwards, and add text and filters to it. Uploading an image needs a computer.
  • Make it 9:16: YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels, at least 640 tall, as a JPG or PNG.
  • A good cover is one clear face or object and three to five big words, kept in the middle of the frame, in the same style every time.

Can you change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?

Yes, in two ways. Until July 2026, the only choice was a frame of the Short itself. On July 24, 2026, YouTube announced that creators in its Partner Program can upload custom thumbnails for Shorts, and said it will expand this to more creators over time. YouTube's help center adds that your account must be verified to use it. Here's what you can do where:

YouTube also now suggests three frames to choose from for Shorts on a computer, as it does for long videos. And the thumbnail you choose for a Short follows the same rules as any other: it must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines.

How to upload a custom Shorts thumbnail in YouTube Studio

On a computer, in a browser:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio (studio.youtube.com).
  2. Open Content in the menu on the left, then the Shorts tab at the top.
  3. Open the Short you want to change, with the edit (pencil) icon.
  4. Under Thumbnail, click Upload file and choose your image.
  5. Click Save. YouTube says the new thumbnail can take a while to appear.

No Upload file button? Check these, in order:

  • Verify your account. YouTube asks for a phone number and sends a code; verifying unlocks custom thumbnails, among other features.
  • It may not have reached you yet. The upload started with Partner Program creators in July 2026 and is rolling out to others over time.
  • The daily limit. Channels can upload only so many custom thumbnails a day. If you see “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached”, try again in 24 hours.
  • Strikes. Community Guidelines strikes cut how many custom thumbnails you can upload, and repeated thumbnail violations can take the feature away for 30 days.

How to change a Shorts thumbnail in the YouTube app

On a phone, you choose a frame of the Short rather than an image of your own. You can do it while you post it, or later. YouTube's steps, for Android and iPhone:

While you upload the Short:

  1. Tap Create, then Short, record or add your video, and fill in its details.
  2. On the final upload screen, tap Edit on the thumbnail.
  3. Pick the frame you want. You can add text and apply filters to it.
  4. Tap Done.

After it's posted:

  1. In the YouTube app, go to your channel and Your videos.
  2. Tap More (the three dots) on the Short, then Edit.
  3. Pick a new frame, add text or a filter if you like, and tap Done.

Once you finish an edit to the thumbnail, you can't go back to an earlier one, so check it before you tap Done. And you're limited to what's in the Short: for a cover with big, styled words, make the image yourself and upload it in Studio on a computer.

YouTube Shorts thumbnail size, and where it shows

What YouTube recommends for a Short's custom thumbnail:

  • Shape: 9:16, the shape of the Short.
  • Size: 2160 × 3840 pixels, and at least 640 pixels tall. Use the largest image you can.
  • File: a JPG or PNG, under 50 MB when you upload it on a computer.

2160 × 3840 is exactly twice 1080 × 1920, so a cover made at either size has the same layout. Make it big for YouTube and the smaller copy for TikTok.

Where people see it. YouTube lists where viewers find Shorts: the Shorts feed, the Home tab, Subscriptions, search, and sound and hashtag pages. In the Shorts feed a Short starts playing as soon as it's on screen, so the thumbnail isn't what people see there. Everywhere else, Shorts show as tiles next to others, including on your channel's Shorts tab, and the thumbnail is what someone decides on. That matters: YouTube says it ranks Shorts partly on the share of viewers who choose to watch one when it's shown to them.

YouTube doesn't publish how each of those pages crops a Short's thumbnail, so design for the middle of the frame: more on that below.

What makes a good Shorts thumbnail

A Shorts thumbnail is seen small and in a hurry, between other covers. What works:

  • One clear subject. A face mid-reaction, or the object the Short is about, large and sharp. TikTok's advice for its own covers is the same: a clear picture of the person or object as the focus.
  • Three to five big words. Say what the Short is or why it's worth a tap (“I quit after one week”, “3 mistakes I made”), not the whole title. Big enough to read on a grid tile.
  • Keep it in the middle. Covers are shown at different sizes and shapes, and the edges are what gets cut. Keep the face and the words in the center of the 9:16 frame, clear of the top and bottom.
  • Don't cover the face with words. Put the text above or below the subject.
  • The same look every time. One font, one color for the key word, the subject in the same place: your channel's Shorts tab reads as a series, and people tap through from one to the next.
  • Promise what the Short delivers. YouTube looks at whether viewers stay after they choose a Short, not only whether they tap. A cover that oversells gets the tap and then the swipe.

You can't A/B test a Short's thumbnail: YouTube's test and compare feature doesn't support Shorts. To learn what works, keep one style for a run of Shorts, then try another, and compare how they do. More on what gets Shorts watched in how to get more views on YouTube Shorts.

Covers on TikTok and Instagram Reels

If you post the same clip to all three apps, you can use the same cover, with one difference in shape. TikTok calls its version a video cover: the thumbnail that previews your video on your profile and in search results. Instagram calls it a reel's cover photo.

Instagram Reels420 × 654 (about 1:1.55)When you share: tap Edit cover to pick a frame or add an image; on a computer, use the Cover photo slider or Select from computerInstagram's help says not after it's uploaded
  • TikTok suggests a 9:16 cover at 1080 × 1920 for the best results, and asks you to keep the subject centered and elements away from the edges, where the For You feed's buttons and text sit. It also suggests the same text template on every cover, so your profile looks put together.
  • Instagram suggests a cover a little wider than 9:16. Fitted to that shape, a 1080 × 1920 cover would lose about 12% of its height, roughly the top and bottom 120 pixels: one more reason to keep the words in the middle. Pick the cover before you share, since Instagram's help says you can't change it after.

How to make a Shorts thumbnail for free

The free Shorts thumbnail maker makes a 9:16 cover from a frame of your video, with big, bold words in the lettering of Clyper's captions. It runs in your browser, so the video isn't uploaded anywhere:

  1. Choose your video, or an image, and slide to the frame you want: a clear face, mid-reaction.
  2. Write the title. Put *stars* around a word to color it, and press Enter for a new line.
  3. Pick a look (Outline, Yellow or Box), then the size and height of the words. Turn on the guides to see what the apps' buttons cover.
  4. Fill the frame: crop a wide video to 9:16 and drag to choose what stays, or fit the whole picture on a blurred copy of itself.
  5. Download a 2160 × 3840 JPG for YouTube, or 1080 × 1920 for TikTok and Reels. Free, with no watermark.

Under the preview, it shows the cover small, the way it looks on a profile beside two others. To compare with Shorts that do well in your niche, the free YouTube thumbnail downloader gets any video's thumbnail from its link, Shorts links included: study them, but make your own.

A cover earns the tap; the Short has to hold the viewer after it. If you're cutting Shorts from your long videos, the work is in finding the moments, cutting them on whole sentences, reframing to 9:16 and captioning every word. That's what Clyper does: paste the video's YouTube link and it makes the Shorts, then you make the covers. Questions

Can you change the thumbnail of a YouTube Short?

Yes. In YouTube Studio on a computer you can upload your own image for a Short you've posted. In the YouTube app you can pick any frame of the Short, while you upload it or afterwards, and add text and filters to it.

Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail for my Short?

Custom images for Shorts can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and your account must be verified with a phone number. YouTube began with Partner Program creators on July 24, 2026 and is adding others over time, and there's a daily limit on uploads.

What size is a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?

9:16. YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels, at least 640 pixels tall, as a JPG or PNG under 50 MB. Keep the face and words in the middle, since some places show it cropped.

How do I change a Shorts thumbnail on my phone?

In the YouTube app, go to your channel and Your videos, tap More on the Short, then Edit, and pick a frame. You can't upload your own image in the app: that needs YouTube Studio on a computer.

Can I A/B test a Shorts thumbnail?

No. YouTube's test and compare feature for titles and thumbnails doesn't support Shorts. Try one cover style across several Shorts, then another, and compare how they do.

Do Shorts thumbnails matter?

Not in the Shorts feed, where a Short plays as soon as it's on screen. They matter on Home, Subscriptions, search, sound and hashtag pages and your channel, where people choose between tiles, and YouTube ranks Shorts partly on how many viewers choose to watch.
