Descript alternatives for clips, compared

Descript is a very good editor for podcasts and talking videos, and it can make clips too. But if clips are what you're after, a whole editor is a lot to set up and pay for. Here are the ten tools people weigh instead for clips, with prices from their own sites. We make the first one, and we'll say why it's first.

Why people switch from Descript

Descript works from files: you bring them in from your computer, Zoom or Google Drive, not from a YouTube link. Then Create clips asks how many you want (1 to 20), how long (10 seconds to 5 minutes), which layout and, if you like, a topic, and it spends AI credits on top of your media hours.

That's the right amount of control when you're editing the episode anyway. When you're clipping other people's videos, or you want clips without opening an editor, it's a lot of steps. Descript's help center also lists Center active speaker, which keeps whoever's talking in frame, as a beta, and it transcribes 25+ languages.

Our pick: an AI clipping tool built for clippers

Clyper

Yes, we make it, so of course it's first. We'd put it there anyway, for clips: paste a YouTube link and they come back cut to whole sentences, framed on whoever's talking, captioned and scored, with nothing to set up. Keep Descript for editing the episode; let Clyper make the clips once it's on YouTube.

Best for

  • Clips straight from a YouTube link, public or unlisted, with nothing to set up.
  • Every clip framed on whoever's talking, switching when the other person answers.
  • Captions in 50+ languages, where Descript transcribes 25+, and a hook score on every clip.

Good to know

  • It doesn't edit episodes: no transcript editing and no timeline. Keep an editor for the show.
  • There's no free plan; Starter is $20 month to month.

How to choose

  1. Whose videos you clip. If it's other creators' YouTube videos, for campaigns, you need a tool that takes any public link. That narrows it fast.
  2. How much you'll clip. Work out the hours of video a month, then compare the price per minute, not the price per plan.
  3. How much you want to edit. Clips ready to post, or an editor to finish them in. Every step you add, you repeat on every clip.
  4. Try it on a real video. Use a free plan where there is one, or a month of the smallest plan, on the kind of video you'll actually clip.

Every tool, side by side: AI clipping tools compared. Clipping more than you can watch? Studio takes 10 links at once.

Questions

What is the best Descript alternative for clips?

Clyper, if what you need is clips: paste a YouTube link and get vertical clips framed on whoever's talking, captioned in 50+ languages and ranked by hook score, without opening an editor. If you need a full editor instead, CapCut's is free.

Is there a free alternative to Descript for clips?

OpusClip has a free plan (60 minutes a month, with a watermark, and clips that can't be exported after 3 days); Vizard has a free plan (60 minutes a month at 720p, with a watermark); Klap has one video free to try; quso.ai has a free plan in some countries (75 minutes a month at 720p, with a watermark); Submagic has a free trial (3 short videos, with a watermark); CapCut has a free editor (if you cut each clip by hand); Spikes Studio has a free plan (demo clips, and up to 30 minutes of video a month by its FAQ, at 720p with a watermark); 2short.ai has a free plan (30 minutes a month); StreamLadder has a free clip editor (with a 7-day trial of its AI clipping). Clyper has no free plan; Starter is $20 month to month, so a month is enough to try it on your own videos.

Which Descript alternative is cheapest for clips?

Per minute of video, the cheapest AI clipper here is 2short.ai: $0.0166 a minute on Premium and $0.0221 on Pro, month to month. Clyper Starter is $20 for 150 minutes a month, and Pro comes to $0.0475 a minute billed yearly. Descript's own Hobbyist is $24 a month, or $16 billed yearly, for 10 media hours a month and AI credits for its AI tools: less per hour of video than Clyper, if those hours and credits cover the clips you make.

Why do people look for Descript alternatives?

For clips, mostly the steps: Descript works from uploaded files rather than YouTube links, Create clips asks for a count, length and layout each time and spends AI credits, and you finish the clips in a full editor. People who only need clips want them from a link, ready to post.

Can I use Descript and Clyper together?

Yes. Edit the episode in Descript, publish it to YouTube, and paste the link into Clyper for the clips. Or upload the exported file: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 4 GB.

Which Descript alternatives take YouTube links?

Clyper, Vizard, Klap, Spikes Studio, 2short.ai and quso.ai take YouTube links. Submagic does with its Magic Clips add-on. OpusClip does once you confirm the YouTube channel is yours. StreamLadder's AI clipping takes Twitch and Kick links, and YouTube videos as uploaded files. CapCut work from uploaded files.
