How to get followers on TikTok: a plan to your first 1,000

To get followers on TikTok, pick one niche, make a profile that says what people will get, post videos they finish and want more of, and keep posting until a few of them travel. Here's why 1,000 followers matters, how long it can take, the TikTok features that help (video replies, Stitch, Duet, search), why buying followers backfires, and a 30-day plan to your first 1,000 followers.

In short

  • 1,000 followers opens TikTok LIVE (at 18 or older, and TikTok says the number may vary by region) and a website link in your profile. Creator Rewards needs 10,000, plus 100,000 views in the last 30 days.
  • Followers come from views, and views don't need followers: TikTok says follower count isn't a direct factor in the For You feed. What turns a viewer into a follower is knowing what they'll get next: one niche, a clear profile, a format they can count on.
  • Use what TikTok gives you to grow: video replies to comments, Stitch and Duet with creators in your niche, words people search for, and your profile link on other apps.
  • Don't buy followers or trade follows. TikTok's Community Guidelines ban selling and buying them, TikTok removes fake followers, and posts promising follows or likes in return are kept out of the For You feed.
  • Post every day for 30 days and track one number for each post: new followers per 1,000 views. Make more of whatever wins.

Why 1,000 followers matters on TikTok

Two of the things TikTok holds back from new accounts open at 1,000 followers, and the money waits for 10,000. Here's what TikTok's own pages tie to a follower count:

What TikTok opens at each follower count, from its Help Center and Creator Academy

The count itself doesn't rank your videos. TikTok said in 2020 that “neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos are direct factors” in the For You feed, so your first video can reach strangers. Followers matter because they see your posts in their Following feed, which can put them among a video's first viewers, and because the features above wait for them. How long does it take to get 1,000 followers on TikTok?

TikTok doesn't publish a typical time, and nobody can promise one. What you can do is the math: your followers are your views times the share of viewers who follow. TikTok's Creator Academy calls that share your follower conversion rate. Here's what 1,000 followers takes at a few example rates, spread over the 57 to 70 posts of the plan below:

Views needed for 1,000 TikTok followers at example follower rates (assumptions, not benchmarks)
New followers per 1,000 viewsViews for 1,000 followersViews a post, over 57 posts
2500,000About 8,800
5200,000About 3,500
10100,000About 1,800
2050,000About 880

Find your own rate in TikTok Studio, where Your top posts can rank your best videos by the new followers each one brought.

Now compare with what a typical post gets. Buffer, a scheduling tool, found in a 2025 study of 11.4 million TikTok posts from more than 150,000 accounts that the median post got about 500 views at every posting frequency, from once a week to 11 or more times a week. Posting more raised views per post by up to 34% against the same accounts posting once a week, but mostly by making the best posts bigger. So the first 1,000 followers rarely come evenly. They come from a handful of videos that travel, and from the rest of your profile making those viewers stay.

That's why TikTok's advice is about repetition: “it usually takes more than one good video to get people to follow you”, and “most viewers need to see you deliver more than once.” Two levers, then: more videos with a chance to travel, and a better reason to follow once someone lands on you.

Pick a niche people want more of

People follow when they know what they'll get next. TikTok's Creator Academy puts it first in its steps to more followers: “pick a specific content theme instead of posting random posts”, then narrow it to a few topics, “the more specific, the better”. A niche also helps the For You feed: TikTok says choosing one helps its system work out which audience your videos are for.

  1. Choose something you can post about every day for months. A creator you love, a show, a skill, a topic you know. If you clip other people's videos, give each creator or show its own account: see how to start a clip channel.
  2. Check people look for it. Type “Creator Search Insights” into TikTok's search bar. It lists topics people search for often, and its Content gap filter shows topics with lots of searches but few good videos yet.
  3. Narrow it until it's yours. “Podcast clips” is a category; “the best guest moments from one show” is a reason to follow. Once you have viewers, the Viewers tab in TikTok Studio shows the creators your audience also follows and the posts it also watches.

Faceless works too: a clip account, a narrated how-to or a screen recording can build a following. See how to make money on TikTok without showing your face.

Set up a profile that turns viewers into followers

A viewer who likes one video often taps through to your profile before deciding. TikTok's Creator Academy says your name and bio are the parts that matter most there. Set it up before your first post:

  • A username and name people can find. TikTok suggests a username with words that describe your content, to help you show up in search, and warns off random handles like @user123. You can change your username once every 30 days and your name once every 7, so choose with care.
  • A bio that says what you post. One line on the content and what it gives people, not “I post cool stuff”. TikTok's pages give different limits (80 characters in the Help Center, 160 in the Creator Academy), so keep it short.
  • A clear photo you keep. TikTok suggests a high-quality one, the same on every platform you use, so people recognize you.
  • Pinned videos and covers that match. Pin the videos that best show what the account is, and give your covers a consistent style with a short title, so someone scrolling your profile sees a set, not a jumble.
  • A personal account. Creator Rewards is only for personal accounts, and Verified Business Accounts can't use the general music library.

Until you reach 1,000 followers you can't add a website link, so put your other handles in the bio or on screen. Setting up a brand-new account? How to warm up a new account covers what TikTok does and doesn't hold back at the start.

Videos that make people follow: series, replies, Stitch and Duet

Views come from a strong hook; follows come from a promise of more. These formats make that promise, and TikTok recommends each of them for growing an audience:

  • A repeatable format, or a series. The Creator Academy suggests starting a series once you find a topic or format that works, and posting a format on a set day, like a new tip every Tuesday. A story told in parts gives people a reason to follow for the next one. (TikTok's own feature called Series is something else: paid collections behind a paywall, at 10,000 followers.) Playlists group a series on your profile, but not every account has them yet (two Creator Academy articles say they need 10,000 followers).
  • Replies to comments, as videos. TikTok's reply to comment feature lets you answer a comment with a video. It makes the person who asked feel heard and hands you your next idea.
  • Stitch. It uses part of another creator's video as part of yours, so you can react, answer or add to it. Only videos whose creators allow it can be Stitched, and the result shows on your profile, not theirs.
  • Duet. Your video plays side by side with another creator's, both at once. The same rules apply. Neither Stitches nor Duets count as original for Creator Rewards, so use them to reach people, not as most of your posts.
  • Trends, in your niche. TikTok suggests putting your own spin on what's trending; Creation inspiration in TikTok Studio shows popular videos to start from.

Whatever the format, open on the payoff and end with one specific ask, not a generic “like and follow”, which TikTok's Creator Academy calls forgettable. The hook generator gives you opening lines to try, and short video hooks has examples by type.

Get found outside the For You feed: search, collabs and cross-posting

The For You feed isn't the only way in. Three more bring people to a new account:

  • TikTok search. TikTok says search “values relevance over video views and engagement”, so a small account can rank for what it's about. Say the topic in the caption, in text on screen and in a few relevant hashtags, and don't stack popular keywords that don't fit: TikTok says that hurts. More in how to get more views on TikTok.
  • Collaborations. TikTok's advice is to reach out to similar creators in your community and collaborate through Duet, Stitch and LIVE. Start with creators about your size, and comment on their videos when you have something to add: the Creator Academy suggests it as a way into each other's audiences. Once you can go LIVE, co-hosting puts you in front of another creator's viewers in real time.
  • Cross-posting. TikTok suggests sharing your profile link on your other platforms and inviting people there to follow you on TikTok. If you post the same clips on Reels and Shorts, upload your own clean file to each, never a download with another app's watermark: TikTok keeps clips showing someone else's watermark or logo out of the For You feed. See how to cross-post short videos.

Why buying followers breaks TikTok's rules

Bought followers and follow-for-follow swaps look like a shortcut to 1,000. TikTok's Community Guidelines rule them out in plain words:

  • TikTok doesn't allow “the trade of services that artificially boost engagement or trick the recommendation system”, naming followers and likes. Its examples of spam include “buying or selling followers or engagement for financial gain”.
  • For deceptive behavior it may ban the account, ban new accounts you create, or restrict it, “which could include limiting your ability to post new content, appear in top search results, or in the FYF.”
  • “If we detect accounts or content with inauthentic metrics, we'll remove fake likes, followers, or other inflated signals.” You can pay for followers and lose them.
  • Posts that trick people into engaging, like “like-for-like” promises and false incentives for following, aren't eligible for the For You feed. A follow-for-follow post is the same idea.
  • Creator Rewards removes accounts that acquire fake views or inflate follower counts. And following accounts too quickly can get yours temporarily disabled, TikTok's Help Center warns.

Even unpunished, bought followers don't help: they don't watch, share or comment, the things TikTok says the For You feed weighs most. If you want to pay for reach, TikTok's own Promote is the allowed way: it runs a post as an ad. You need to be 18 or older, and the post has to use original sound or sounds cleared for commercial use. Promoted views don't count toward Creator Rewards.

How often to post on TikTok, and a 30-day plan to 1,000 followers

TikTok's answer to how often is simple: “Post more often! The more videos you post, the more opportunities you give the recommendation system to understand your content and place it with the right audience.” Its Help Center says to upload “on a regular basis”, and the Creator Academy that “consistency matters more than perfection”. Pick a pace you can keep for months, and spread posts through the day rather than posting them all at once. For when, see the best time to post on TikTok, Reels and Shorts, and for how much, how often to post.

Here's a month built on that. The pace is an assumption: it takes about an hour a day, and long videos to clip, your own or ones you have permission to use. Change it to fit your time.

A 30-day plan to 1,000 TikTok followers: 57 to 70 posts (the pace is an assumption)
DaysPosts a dayWhat you doWhat you check
1 to 31Pick the niche, set up the profile, list 10 topics people search for. Post your first clips, each with a different hookAccount check comes back clear
4 to 102Try two formats in the niche. Reply to every comment, and answer the best question with a videoWhere the retention graph drops in the first seconds
11 to 172Turn the format that brought the most followers into a series. Stitch or Duet one creator in your nicheNew followers on each post, against its views
18 to 242 to 3Put searched words in captions and on screen. Pin your best videos. Ask a creator of a similar size to collaborateSearch queries under traffic source
25 to 302 to 3Keep the pace. Post the same clips, from your own files, on Reels and Shorts, and put your TikTok handle in those profilesYour top posts by new followers, and the Followers tab

The hard part is supply: 57 to 70 videos in a month. By hand, each one means finding the moment, cutting it on a clean sentence, reframing it to vertical and captioning every word. Clyper does that from a YouTube link or an upload: it picks the moments that stand on their own from the transcript, frames 9:16 on whoever's talking, captions every word and scores each clip's hook. A video of 60 minutes or more gives up to 30 clips, so 2 or 3 long videos can fill the month. You still post them yourself; Clyper doesn't post or schedule.

Questions

How do you get 1,000 followers on TikTok fast?

Pick one niche, set up a profile that says what you post, and post one to three videos a day that open on the point. Reply to comments with videos, Stitch and Duet creators in your niche, and make more of the posts that bring the most followers per view. There's no reliable shortcut that stays within TikTok's rules.

How many followers do you need to go LIVE on TikTok?

1,000, and you have to be 18 or older. TikTok says the follower number may vary by region, and LIVE isn't available everywhere.

How many followers do you need to get paid on TikTok?

10,000 for the Creator Rewards Program, with 100,000 views in the last 30 days, a personal account, an age of 18 or older and original videos at least a minute long, in the countries where it runs. Clipping campaigns pay per view and set their own requirements.

Does follow-for-follow work on TikTok?

Not for long. TikTok keeps posts that offer false incentives for following, like like-for-like promises, out of the For You feed, and following accounts too fast can get yours temporarily disabled. Followers from a swap don't watch your videos, so they don't help your reach.

Is it safe to buy TikTok followers?

No. TikTok's Community Guidelines ban buying and selling followers, TikTok removes fake followers it detects, and it can restrict or ban the account. Creator Rewards also removes accounts that inflate their follower counts.

How often should I post on TikTok to gain followers?

As often as you can keep up with good videos. TikTok says posting more gives its system more chances to place your content. In Buffer's 2025 study of 11.4 million posts, accounts got up to 34% more views per post at 11 or more posts a week than at one, with the biggest single step from one post a week to two to five.
