How to make a YouTube thumbnail that gets clicks

To make a YouTube thumbnail, start from a clear frame of your video, add a few big words, and save it as a 16:9 JPG or PNG: YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels. Here's the size and every rule YouTube sets, what makes people click, how to make one for free, in Canva or in Photoshop, how to upload it, and how to test it against others.

Updated 13 min read

In short

  • YouTube thumbnail size: 16:9, ideally 3840 × 2160 pixels and at least 640 wide, as a JPG or PNG, up to 50 MB from a computer or 2 MB from the phone app. Your account must be verified to upload your own.
  • To make one: pick a frame where the subject is sharp, add three to five big words, darken what's behind them, and check it at the size people see it, small in a feed.
  • YouTube's advice: design for who the video is for, keep it simple, use a readable font, and let the thumbnail and title tell the story together. Never promise what the video doesn't deliver.
  • Test it: YouTube Studio on a computer can A/B test up to 3 thumbnails (and titles) on a long video, and keeps the one with the most watch time.

YouTube thumbnail size and requirements

Before you make a YouTube thumbnail, get the size right. The same image is shown everywhere: as a small tile on a phone, large on a TV, and as the preview image when the video is embedded on a website. YouTube's help page says to make it “as large as possible”, and asks for this:

SmallestAt least 640 pixels wideStay at 1280 × 720 or above: below that, an A/B test shrinks every option to 854 × 480

Verifying takes a phone number: in YouTube Studio on a computer, go to Settings, then Channel, then Feature eligibility, and verify it under Intermediate features. YouTube sends a code by text or voice call, and the same step unlocks videos longer than 15 minutes and live streaming.

The rules on what's in it. Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines. YouTube can reject a thumbnail with nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, or harmful or dangerous content, and give the channel a strike; repeat offenses can take away custom thumbnails for 30 days, or end the account. There's also a daily limit on how many custom thumbnails a channel can upload: if you see “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached”, try again in 24 hours.

What makes people click a YouTube thumbnail

The thumbnail and title are usually the first thing a viewer sees, and they decide whether the video gets watched at all. YouTube's own figure: 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails. Its tips for designing one:

  • Design for who it's for. A video for your subscribers can lean on what they already know (YouTube's example is your best friend). A video for casual viewers works better with actions and emotions anyone recognizes, like a shocked face.
  • Use the rule of thirds, then add your branding and descriptive text, in a font that's easy to read.
  • Keep it simple. Bold color and composition catch the eye; too much of either overwhelms it.
  • Let the thumbnail and title work together to tell the story, rather than say the same thing twice.
  • Take photos while you shoot, so you have options when you upload.
  • Keep up with your community. Styles shift over time, and YouTube suggests trying new thumbnails on older videos to appeal to new viewers.

And be accurate. YouTube's performance FAQ says to avoid thumbnails and titles that are misleading or clickbaity, shocking, disgusting, violent or indecent, and titles in ALL CAPS or with !!!!!. Overselling also backfires on its own terms: YouTube recommends a video when its average view duration shows viewers find it interesting, and clickbait tends to get the click and lose the viewer. At its worst, it's against the rules: YouTube's spam policy names “malicious clickbait”, a thumbnail or title that tricks people into a video that doesn't deliver what was promised.

Within those rules, what usually works:

  • One subject, big. A face mid-reaction, or the one object the video is about, large and sharp. Two or three small things read as none.
  • Three to five words, not the title. The title is right below; the words on the thumbnail add to it. “Fixed in 10 minutes” on a thumbnail beside the title “How to fix a flat bike tire” says more than the title twice.
  • Contrast. Light words on a dark area, or the other way round. Darken the side of the picture behind the text.
  • The same look across your channel. One font, one highlight color, the subject on the same side: viewers learn to spot your videos in a feed.

How to make a YouTube thumbnail for free

The free YouTube thumbnail maker does all of that in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there's nothing to sign up for, and there's no watermark.

  1. Start from a frame of your video (scrub to the moment) or from an image. It fills the 16:9 frame; drag it to position it.
  2. Add a bold title, and pick the words to highlight in a second color.
  3. Choose a style (an outline, a color, or a box behind the text), then size the words and place them by dragging.
  4. Darken the side behind the text, so it stands out from the picture.
  5. Add an image on top if you want one: a PNG of your face cut out, or your logo.
  6. Check the preview. It shows the thumbnail the way YouTube does, small, on the home page, in search and in Up next, with the video's length in the corner, in light and dark mode.
  7. Download a JPG or PNG at 1280 × 720 (kept under 2 MB, so it also uploads from the phone app), or at 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160.

Most of the work is in step 1. Scrub to a moment where the face or the object is sharp and the expression says what the video is about; a blurred frame caught mid-word rarely works. If no frame is good enough, that's what taking photos while you shoot is for.

To see what you're up against, save the thumbnails of the top videos for your topic with the YouTube thumbnail downloader and look at yours beside them, at feed size. Study them for what stands out, then make your own.

How to make a YouTube thumbnail in Canva or Photoshop

In Canva, following Canva's own steps:

  1. Open Canva and search for the “YouTube Thumbnail” design type.
  2. Pick a template you like, and click it to start designing.
  3. Upload your own images (a frame of your video, a photo of you), then change the layout, fonts and colors.
  4. Click Download and choose a format: JPG for a smaller file, PNG for higher quality. Then upload it to YouTube.

Canva's YouTube Thumbnail design is 1,280 × 720 pixels, and its page still gives a 2 MB limit: numbers you'll see in many guides. That size still works: it's above YouTube's minimum, and not below the A/B test's 1280 × 720 floor. But YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 and takes up to 50 MB from a computer.

In Photoshop, using the steps in Adobe's help pages:

  1. Choose File > New (Ctrl+N on Windows, Cmd+N on a Mac) and set the width and height in pixels: 3840 × 2160, or 1920 × 1080.
  2. Bring in your frame with File > Place Embedded, or drag the image file onto the document, and scale it to fill the frame.
  3. To cut yourself out of a photo, select its layer and use the Remove Background quick action: choose Help > Photoshop Help to open the Discover panel, then Browse > Quick Actions > Remove Background.
  4. Add the words with the Horizontal Type tool, and an outline with Layer > Layer Style > Stroke.
  5. Choose File > Export > Export As, pick JPG, set the quality, and export.

Or in YouTube Studio. Under Thumbnail, you can pick one of the options YouTube generates from the video, or select Get suggestions to have one made. And Ask Studio, the AI assistant in YouTube Studio, can generate a thumbnail for a long video from its transcript and themes: ask for one, then ask for changes, like bigger text. YouTube says Ask Studio is available to most creators, on a computer only, though not to Made for Kids channels, Official Artist Channels or creators under 18.

How to upload or change a YouTube thumbnail

On a computer:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content in the menu on the left.
  2. Open the video you want to change with the edit (pencil) icon.
  3. Under Thumbnail, click Upload file and choose your image.
  4. Click Save.

On a phone, in the YouTube Studio app: tap Content, select the video, tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail, then Custom thumbnail to choose an image from your phone; tap Select, then Save. In the YouTube app it's your profile picture, Your videos, then More next to the video, Edit, and Edit thumbnail. From a phone, the image has to be under 2 MB.

YouTube says a new thumbnail can take a while to appear everywhere. For a new video, the same Thumbnail option is there while you upload it.

Should you change a thumbnail later? YouTube's answer: changing the title or thumbnail doesn't re-rank a video by itself, but viewers may respond differently to the new look, and that can change how it's recommended. It calls a new thumbnail “an effective way to get more views”, with a warning: don't change what's working. A fair rule is to give a new video a few days, then try a new thumbnail on one that has slowed down. Better still, test it, below.

A/B test your thumbnail with YouTube's Test & Compare

YouTube Studio has a built-in A/B test, which started out as Test & Compare. You give it up to 3 thumbnails, 3 titles, or 3 combinations of both; YouTube shows them to viewers at the same time, and when the test is over, the one with the most watch time is shown to everyone. It judges by watch time, not click-through rate, because it wants a thumbnail that brings the right viewers, not only more clicks.

Who has it. Anyone with advanced features turned on, in YouTube Studio on a computer. It doesn't work on Shorts, scheduled live streams or Premieres (a Premiere can be tested once it has become a regular video, and live stream recordings can), or on videos that are made for kids, private, or for mature audiences.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the video from Content (or start a new upload).
  2. In the Title box or under Thumbnail, click A/B Testing.
  3. Choose Title only, Thumbnail only, or Title and thumbnail.
  4. Add up to 3 versions, and click Done.

A test takes from a few days to 2 weeks, depending on how many impressions the video gets. Follow it in the video's Analytics, on the Reach tab, under “How your A/B test is going”. Changing the title or thumbnail during a test stops it.

YouTube A/B test results, and what happens next
ResultWhat it meansWhat YouTube shows
WinnerOne version clearly got more watch timeThe winner, to everyone
Performed sameThe versions did about as well as each otherThe first version you uploaded, until you pick another
InconclusiveNot enough difference to tellThe first version you uploaded, until you pick another

YouTube's tips: test older videos first, so an early loser costs less; make the versions really different (a new face or a new idea, not a new shade of yellow), or the test runs long without a winner; and upload every version at 1280 × 720 or larger, since one smaller image shrinks them all to 854 × 480.

Common YouTube thumbnail mistakes

  • Too many words. A sentence on a thumbnail can't be read at feed size. Three to five words, or none.
  • Repeating the title. The title is right under it. Use the thumbnail for the part the title doesn't say: the result, the reaction, the before and after.
  • A picture that's too busy. Five objects, three colors of text and a border compete for one glance.
  • A promise the video doesn't keep. High click-through with low average view duration is YouTube's own sign of a clickbait thumbnail, and it tends to mean fewer impressions, not more.
  • A small or blurry image. Upscaling a 640-pixel frame doesn't add detail. Export from the original video, at 1280 × 720 or more.
  • Text in the corner. The video's length is shown over one corner of the thumbnail; keep words and faces clear of it.
  • Never testing. You can't tell which thumbnail is better by looking. Run an A/B test, or compare click-through rates over time on similar videos.

Thumbnails for Shorts, and Shorts for your video

A Short's thumbnail is a different shape: 9:16, with 2160 × 3840 pixels recommended and at least 640 tall. On July 24, 2026, YouTube announced custom Shorts thumbnails for Partner Program creators, to expand to others over time; they can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and in the app you pick a frame of the Short. Make one with the free Shorts thumbnail maker, and see how to change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail for the steps. One more thing YouTube notes: a vertical video given a 16:9 custom thumbnail shows an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail instead on Home, Explore and Subscriptions.

A thumbnail only works on people YouTube shows the video to. Shorts reach people it hasn't: the Shorts feed puts them in front of viewers who have never seen your channel. Cut a few moments of a long video as Shorts and link each one to the full video as its related video (in YouTube Studio, open the Short and select a related video from your channel), and every Short becomes another way in, with the thumbnail you made waiting at the end of it.

By hand, that means watching the video again for moments that stand on their own, then trimming, reframing and captioning each one. Clyper does those steps from the video's YouTube link: it reads the transcript to find the best moments, cuts each on whole sentences, scores its hook, frames it 9:16 on whoever's talking and captions every word. You choose how many, up to one for every 2 minutes of video; you post them and set the related video. New to all this? Start with how to start a YouTube channel, then how to get your first 1,000 subscribers.

Questions

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG. It takes files up to 50 MB from a computer, or 2 MB from the phone app.

How do I make a YouTube thumbnail for free?

Use the free YouTube thumbnail maker: start from a frame of your video or an image, add a bold title, choose a style, check the preview at feed size, and download a JPG or PNG. It runs in your browser, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube?

Your account probably isn't verified: verify it with a phone number in YouTube Studio under Settings, Channel, Feature eligibility. If it is, you may have hit the daily limit (try again in 24 hours), or lost custom thumbnails for a while after repeated violations.

How do I change a YouTube thumbnail on my phone?

In the YouTube Studio app, tap Content, select the video, tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail, then Custom thumbnail, choose the image and tap Save. From a phone, the image has to be under 2 MB.

Can you A/B test thumbnails on YouTube?

Yes. With advanced features on, YouTube Studio on a computer can test up to 3 thumbnails, titles or both on a long video, and shows the one with the most watch time to everyone. It doesn't work on Shorts.

What should a YouTube thumbnail have on it?

One clear subject (a face or the thing the video is about), three to five big words that add to the title, and strong contrast. Most of all, it should show what the video really delivers.
