How to compress a video without losing quality

A video's file size comes down to two things: how many bits it spends each second, and how many seconds it has. Compressing well means choosing those on purpose rather than letting an app guess. Here's how size works, how much video fits in Discord's and Gmail's limits, which settings keep it looking good, and how to do it free in your browser.

In short

  • File size is bitrate times length: halve either and the file halves.
  • When a size is tight, a smaller, cleaner picture looks better than a big, blocky one.
  • MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays everywhere: on Discord, in email and on every phone.
  • Don't compress before posting to TikTok, Reels or Shorts. They take large files and compress them again anyway.

What makes a video file big

A video file is mostly its bitrate, the number of bits spent on each second of picture and sound, multiplied by its length. A 10-minute video at 8 Mbps is about 600 MB; the same video at 2 Mbps is about 150 MB. Everything else, like the container (MP4, MOV) and the file name, is a rounding error.

Phones and cameras record at high bitrates so there's room to edit, which is why a minute of phone footage can be 100 MB or more. Compressing is choosing a lower bitrate, and choosing where the loss shows least.

How much video fits in a size

At a total bitrate (picture plus sound), this is how much video fits in the sizes people most often need:

Minutes of video that fit, by size and bitrate
Bitrate10 MBDiscord (20 MB)Gmail (25 MB)
4.0 Mbps20 s40 s50 s
2.0 Mbps40 s1 min 20 s1 min 40 s
1.0 Mbps1 min 20 s2 min 40 s3 min 20 s
0.5 Mbps2 min 40 s5 min 20 s6 min 40 s

Work backwards from that: divide the size you need by the video's length, and you have the most bitrate you can spend. The video compressor does exactly that, leaving a little room for the file itself.

Pick the picture size for the bitrate

Every pixel needs some bits to look clean. Give a 1080p picture too few and it turns into blocks, especially on movement; give the same bits to a 720p picture and it stays sharp. As a rule of thumb for H.264 at 30 frames a second:

Video bitrate to look clean, by picture size, at 30 frames a second
PicturePixelsLooks clean from about
1080p1920 × 10802.8 Mbps
720p1280 × 7201.2 Mbps
480p854 × 4800.6 Mbps

So if your budget is 1.5 Mbps, 720p will look better than 1080p. At 60 frames a second, double the numbers, or halve the frame rate: most talking videos look the same at 30.

Use MP4 with H.264

  • H.264 in an MP4 plays on every phone, browser and app, and previews inline on Discord. It's the safe choice for anything you send.
  • H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 make files about a third to half smaller at the same quality, but some browsers, computers and apps can't play them. Use them only when you know the other end can.
  • Sound: AAC at 128 kbps is clear for speech and music, and 64 kbps is fine for speech alone. Sound is small next to picture, so it's rarely worth squeezing hard.

How to compress a video, step by step

  1. Cut it first. The cheapest seconds are the ones you remove. Trim the start and end with the video trimmer.
  2. Open the video compressor and choose the file. It stays on your device.
  3. Pick the size you need: Discord, email, 10 MB, half, or a number of your own. The estimate shows the size and the picture you'll get.
  4. Compress and check. Play the result before you send it. If it's too soft, pick a bigger size or a shorter part.

Size limits worth knowing

Upload limits for files people often compress for
WhereLimitWorth knowing
Discord, free20 MB per fileRaised from 10 MB on August 13, 2026
Discord Nitro Basic / Nitro50 MB / 500 MBPer file
Gmail25 MBBigger files are sent as a Google Drive link
TikTok, Reels and ShortsFar largerNo need to compress; they re-encode everything

Posting to TikTok, Reels or Shorts

Don't compress for these. The apps take large files and re-encode everything you upload, so a file you've already squeezed gets squeezed twice. Upload the best copy you have, vertical at 1080 × 1920, and check it against each app with the video size checker.

If the video is long, what you want is clips of its best moments rather than a smaller file: see how to repurpose a long video.

Questions

How do I compress a video without losing quality?

Some quality always goes when a file gets smaller, but you can make it hard to see: cut what you don't need first, use MP4 with H.264, and let the picture get smaller rather than blockier when the size is tight. Ask for the biggest size you can send.

How do I make a video smaller for Discord?

Compress it to under 20 MB, the free upload limit since August 2026. The video compressor has a Discord setting that works out the bitrate and picture size that fit your video's length.

Why is my phone video so big?

Phones record at high bitrates, often 10 to 50 Mbps, so there's room to edit. That's far more than you need to send or watch a video, which is why it compresses so well.

Is it safe to compress a video online?

Many online compressors upload your video to their servers. Clyper's video compressor runs in your browser instead, so the file never leaves your device.

Does compressing a video change its length?

No. Compressing changes the bitrate, and maybe the picture size, not the length. To make a video shorter, trim it.

Should I compress videos before posting to TikTok?

No. TikTok, Instagram and YouTube re-encode every upload, so upload the best-quality copy you have and let them compress it once.
