How Clyper captions Japanese videos

There's no language to choose. For a YouTube link, Clyper takes the video's language from YouTube; for an upload, or when YouTube doesn't say, it hears it in the speech. If a YouTube video has dubbed audio tracks, Clyper uses the original one, so a Japanese video is captioned in Japanese, not in a dub.

The speech is transcribed word by word, with the moment each word starts and ends, and the video's title is used as a hint, so names in it come out right more often. Each clip's captions are built from those times: a few words at a time, with a new caption at the end of a sentence, at a comma and at a pause, so a caption never runs across two thoughts.

The captions are burned into the clip, so they look the same on TikTok, Reels and Shorts, with nothing to upload separately. More on styles, size and placement in how to caption short videos.

No spaces, and captions that fit

Japanese has no spaces between words, so captions can't be counted in words. Clyper counts characters instead: Pop, Karaoke and Highlight show up to 8 at a time, One word 3, and Plain 14. A kanji or a kana counts as one, a Latin letter as half.

The transcript comes in short pieces, and Clyper joins them without spaces and only ever starts a new caption between two pieces, never inside one, so 信じて stays together. A 。 or a 、 ends the caption it's in and isn't drawn, as a full stop isn't in English captions.

A font made for Japanese

Poppins has no kanji or kana, so Japanese captions are drawn in Noto Sans JP Bold, with the Japanese forms of the characters Japanese shares with Chinese. Latin words in a Japanese clip, like YouTube or OK, are drawn in it too, so the line doesn't switch fonts halfway through. The font is a few MB, which is why the preview on this page waits for you to ask for it. Your clips don't wait: the font is part of the render.

Every caption style, in Japanese

All 5 styles work in Japanese: switch between them on the preview above. Pop is on every plan, Starter included; Pro and Studio add the other 4, and styles of your own.

  • Pop: Three words at a time. The spoken word turns blue with a quick pop. Every plan.
  • Karaoke: The whole line stays up and fills with yellow as each word is said. Pro and Studio.
  • Highlight: The spoken word gets a bright yellow highlight. Pro and Studio.
  • One word: One big word at a time, popping in as it's said. Pro and Studio.
  • Plain: Calm subtitles in sentence case on a soft dark band, no animation. Pro and Studio.

Hook headlines in Japanese

On Pro and Studio, each clip opens with its hook as a headline in a box at the top for the first 4 seconds, like the one on the preview above. It's written in the video's language, so a Japanese clip opens with a Japanese headline. Reword or remove it on any clip in the editor, or switch headlines off for a video before you start it.

Questions

Does Clyper put spaces between Japanese words?

No. Japanese captions are written without spaces, as Japanese is, and a new caption starts only between two pieces of the transcript, never inside a word.

Are kanji drawn in their Japanese or Chinese forms?

Japanese. Japanese captions use Noto Sans JP. Chinese videos get Noto Sans SC, or Noto Sans TC for traditional Chinese.

What do the capital-letter styles do to Japanese?

Nothing: Japanese has no capitals. Latin words in a Japanese clip are written in capitals in those styles.

Do I have to set the language to Japanese?

No. Clyper takes the language from YouTube or hears it in the speech, and captions each clip in it. There's no setting.

Can I fix a word in the Japanese captions?

Yes. In the clip editor, correct any word, a name or a misheard word, and the preview shows the change before you download.

Can Clyper translate Japanese captions into English?

No. Captions are in the language spoken in the video, so a Japanese video gets Japanese captions, and an English video English ones.

Which plans caption Japanese videos?

Every plan. Starter clips use Pop; Pro and Studio add the other 4 styles, styles of your own and hook headlines.
