Turn Dropbox videos into short clips
Copy the video's share link and paste it. Clyper downloads it straight from Dropbox, up to 10 GB with nothing to upload, finds the moments worth posting, frames whoever's talking and captions every word.
How to get a Dropbox link Clyper can open
Clyper opens a Dropbox link the way someone who isn't signed in would, so the link has to work for anyone who has it, with downloads allowed. A view-only link is all it needs. On dropbox.com:
- 1Share the file, not its folder. Hover over the video and click Share. In the desktop app, right-click it in File Explorer or Finder and click Share…; on a phone, tap the more options icon next to it, then Share.
- 2Copy the link. Click Copy link. A view-only link, which Dropbox calls Link for viewing, is enough.
- 3Check who can open it. On Professional, Essentials and the team plans, a link has settings: click the settings icon at the bottom right of the share window, choose Link for viewing, set Who has access to Anyone with link rather than Team members, leave Disable downloads and Require password off, and click Save.
- 4Paste the whole link above. It looks like
dropbox.com/scl/fi/a1b2c3/keynote.mov?rlkey=...&dl=0. Keep therlkeypart, which is what opens the file. Whether it ends in dl=0 or dl=1 doesn't matter. - 5Long video? Over 4 hours, turn on Clip part of the video and type the From and To times. Only that part uses credits.
Gave the link an expiry date? It has to work until your clips are made. After that you can delete it, from the same settings with Delete link: Clyper deletes its copy of the file when the job is done, and each clip keeps the stretch of video it needs, so your edits keep working.
How it works
- 1
Copy the share link
From dropbox.com, the desktop app or your phone: a dropbox.com/scl/fi/ link to one video file.
- 2
Paste it
Clyper downloads the file from Dropbox, up to 10 GB, and clips up to 4 hours of it at a time.
- 3
Post the clips
Check each one in the editor, then download 1080 × 1920 MP4s with no watermark for TikTok, Reels, Shorts and LinkedIn.
What you get
- Nothing to uploadClyper fetches the file from Dropbox itself, so a big export doesn't sit uploading in a browser tab.
- Up to 10 GBUploads stop at 4 GB. From a Dropbox link, a bigger 1080p or 4K file goes in as it is.
- Long videos, part by partOver 4 hours? Pick a From and a To time. Only that part uses credits, with up to 30 clips from it.
- On whoever's talkingEach clip follows the speaker, switches when someone else takes over and stacks a streamer's webcam over the game.
- Every word captionedIn the video's language, 50+ supported, above the apps' usernames and captions.
- Only that one fileClyper never signs in to your Dropbox. It opens the file the link opens, and deletes it once your clips are made.
“Went from an hour per clip to under 2 minutes. Still can’t believe it.”
Hom Nurkil, solo creator · 90 sec/clipWhich Dropbox links work, and which don't
Clyper takes a shared link to one video file: the dropbox.com/scl/fi/... links Dropbox makes now, with their rlkey, and older dropbox.com/s/... ones. The file can be an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV with sound, from a minute long and up to 10 GB.
- A folder's link (
/scl/fo/or/sh/): open the folder, share the video in it and copy that link. Clyper tells you when you've pasted a folder. - Team members only, a password or downloads off: Clyper says it couldn't open the file. Change the link's settings and paste it again.
- An expired or deleted link: it stops working for everyone, Clyper included.
- Dropbox Transfer and Replay links: share the file itself from your Dropbox instead.
Dropbox's daily limits on shared links
Dropbox caps how much an account's shared links can be downloaded each day, by its plan: 20 GB on Basic, 1 TB on Plus, Family, Professional, Essentials, Standard and Business, and 4 TB on Advanced, Business Plus and Enterprise. Clyper downloads the whole file, so a 10 GB video shared from a Basic account uses 10 GB of that day's 20 GB.
Over the limit, Dropbox pauses the account's sharing, for 24 hours the first time, and a link downloaded too many times in a day shows as temporarily disabled. Clyper then tells you the host is limiting downloads: try again the next day, share the file from an account on a bigger plan, or upload it (up to 4 GB).
Big exports, long videos and footage someone else shot
From a link, Clyper takes files up to 10 GB, against 4 GB for an upload, and clips 4 hours at a time. It downloads the whole file before it starts, so a big one takes longer to get going; you can leave the page while it does. For a longer video, turn on Clip part of the video: each part uses a credit a minute of itself, not of the whole file. That suits a downloaded Twitch VOD, a long OBS recording or a camera's 4K file, kept as it is.
A Dropbox link also saves passing big files around: a client, an editor or a colleague shares the file, and you paste the link. It suits clipping agencies working from client footage, and marketing teams clipping talks and webinars someone else recorded. Clip only footage you own or have permission to use; see is clipping legal?
Over 10 GB? Make it smaller with the free video compressor, or cut it into parts with the video splitter, which copies them without re-encoding. Both run in your browser.
What it costs
A credit is a minute of video, so a plan is how much video you can clip in a month, however many clips it makes. A one-hour video uses 60 credits and can give up to 30 clips, however big the file is.

Questions
Can I make clips from a Dropbox video?
Yes. Copy the video's share link and paste it into Clyper. It downloads the file, finds the moments worth posting, frames whoever's talking and captions every word: up to 30 clips from an hour of video.
Why can't Clyper open my Dropbox link?
Usually because the link is for team members only, has a password, has downloads turned off, has expired or was deleted. Make a link anyone can open, with downloads on, and paste it again. A folder's link doesn't work either: share the video file itself.
Do I need to change dl=0 to dl=1?
No. Paste the link as Dropbox gives it. Clyper keeps the parts that open the file, the rlkey included, and downloads it either way.
Can Clyper connect to my Dropbox account?
No. Clyper doesn't sign in to Dropbox or watch your folders: it opens the one file each link opens, so paste a link for each video. Studio's bulk import takes YouTube links only.
What's the biggest file Clyper takes from Dropbox?
10 GB, against 4 GB for an upload. It clips up to 4 hours at a time, so a longer video goes in a part at a time, each using a credit a minute of itself.
Does Dropbox limit how much a shared link can be downloaded?
Yes, by the plan of the account that shares it: 20 GB a day on Basic, 1 TB on Plus and most paid plans, 4 TB on Advanced, Business Plus and Enterprise. Clyper downloads the whole file, so a big video from a Basic account uses much of that day's allowance.
