Watch time, defined

Watch time is the total time people spend watching a video or a channel, usually counted in hours. It's views multiplied by how long each view lasts. On YouTube, watch hours on public long videos count toward the Partner Program's threshold for ad revenue; watch time on Shorts doesn't, because Shorts have their own route in, by views.

How watch time is counted

Watch time = views × average view duration. A video with 10,000 views at an average of 4:00 each has about 667 hours of watch time. It's close kin to two other numbers, and easy to mix up with them:

Watch time, average view duration and retention: what each measures
MetricWhat it measuresExample
Watch timeThe total time spent watching, across every view667 hours
Average view durationHow long the average view lasts4:00
Retention rateHow much of the video the average view coversAverage view duration ÷ the video's length

YouTube Studio shows watch time in hours for every video. For Shorts it counts average view duration among viewers who stayed to watch past the first seconds. TikTok's analytics show each video's average watch time, and every app uses how long people watch to decide what to recommend.

YouTube watch hours and the Partner Program

To share in ad revenue, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Only some watch hours qualify:

  • They count: hours watched on long-form videos you've set public.
  • They don't: private, unlisted and deleted videos, ad campaigns, YouTube Shorts, and livestreams that are unlisted, deleted or not kept as a video. Watch hours from Shorts in the Shorts feed never count toward the 4,000.

The bar rises for new applicants on February 1, 2027: 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days. Channels already in the program keep their place. Both routes, step by step, are in how to get monetized on YouTube.

How clips add watch time to long videos

Shorts don't add watch hours themselves, but they bring people to the videos that do. A clip is a free sample of a long video: someone who watches a podcast's best answer to the end is the person most likely to want the whole episode.

  • Link each Short to its long video. YouTube lets a Short link to a related video on your channel; how to set it is in how to link a YouTube Short to a video.
  • Clip the moments that leave a question, one the long video answers, rather than ones that wrap everything up.
  • Post clips from every new video, not just the first: each one is another way in.

How the two formats work together is in YouTube Shorts vs long videos.
