Get startedRetention rate, defined
Retention rate, or audience retention, is how much of a video people watch. It's shown as a curve of the share still watching at each moment, as an average (average percentage viewed, or average view duration), or as the share who get past the first seconds. The apps use it to decide who else sees a video.
The three ways retention is measured
| Form | What it shows | On YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| A curve | The share of viewers still watching at each moment of the video | The audience retention report, with its key moments |
| An average | How much of the video the average viewer watched, as a percentage or in seconds | Average percentage viewed and average view duration; for Shorts, counted among viewers who stayed to watch |
| The first seconds | The share of viewers who got past the opening | Stayed to watch, for Shorts; the intro, the share still watching after 30 seconds, for long videos |
The average is the curve in one number. A 40-second clip watched for 26 seconds on average has an average percentage viewed of 65%: 26 ÷ 40 × 100. TikTok and Instagram show their own versions, with different names: each app's numbers, side by side, are in what a good retention rate is.
How to read a retention curve
YouTube Studio's key moments report names four shapes to look for:
- A flat line: viewers watching that part from start to finish. The goal for a short clip.
- A gradual decline: viewers losing interest over time. YouTube says most videos taper off this way, so a slow slope is normal.
- A spike: more people watching, rewatching or sharing that part. Study it: it's a moment worth clipping again.
- A dip: viewers skipping or leaving at that point. Watch what happens just before it.
The steepest drop is nearly always the start, which is why the hook matters most (see hook). YouTube also draws your typical retention, from your 10 latest videos of similar length, and can compare a video with all YouTube videos of similar length. Key moments appear once a video is at least 60 seconds long and has 100 views.
How clips raise retention
- Open on the strongest line. Every second of lead-in is a second for viewers to leave.
- Cut the dead air. Pauses and filler are where curves dip; jump cuts take them out.
- Fit the length to the story. A longer clip keeps a smaller share of its viewers, so stop when the moment is over. More in how long a short video should be.
- Caption every word, so people watching on mute stay with it.
- End on the payoff, not after it: the last line should land, and the clip should stop.
Questions
What is retention rate on YouTube?
How much of your video viewers watch. YouTube Studio shows it as an audience retention curve, with key moments like the intro, spikes and dips, and as average percentage viewed and average view duration.
How do you calculate retention rate?
Divide the average view duration by the video's length and multiply by 100. A 40-second clip watched for 26 seconds on average has a 65% average percentage viewed.
What is a good retention rate?
One that beats your own videos of the same format and length. No app publishes a target, and YouTube itself compares each video with your latest videos of similar length.
Is retention rate the same as watch time?
No. Retention is the share of a video people watch; watch time is the total time they spend watching. A long video can have low retention and still a lot of watch time, and a Short the opposite.
What's the difference between retention rate and hook rate?
Hook rate is only the first seconds: how many viewers get past the opening. Retention covers the whole video, from the opening to the end.
