Get startedShort-form video, defined
Short-form video is video made to be watched on a phone in a vertical feed, where the next one is a swipe away: TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. There's no official length. YouTube counts square or vertical videos of up to 3 minutes as Shorts, and a clip cut from a long video usually runs 20 to 60 seconds.
How long is short-form video?
Each app sets its own limits, and none of them is the definition. Here's what each one's own pages say:
| App | Its limit | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | Up to 3 minutes, square or vertical | A wider video, like 16:9, is a regular video however short |
| Instagram Reels | Record and edit up to 3 minutes | From Instagram's help center, on recording a reel |
| TikTok | Uploads of up to 60 minutes on the web | TikTok suggests splitting anything over 10 minutes into videos of a minute or more |
So short-form is defined by the feed more than the clock: a video someone didn't choose, shown full screen, that has to earn every second before they swipe. That's why it's nearly always vertical video. In practice a clip runs as long as its moment, from the line that hooks to the payoff, and for most moments that's 20 to 60 seconds.
Pay changes the target. TikTok's Creator Rewards Program only pays on videos of at least 1 minute, so people posting their own videos for it aim past 60 seconds. A clipper paid by a campaign follows its brief instead. More on each app's numbers in how long a short video should be.
Why long videos are cut into short-form clips
A long video reaches the people who already follow its creator. Short-form feeds show videos by what people watch, not who they follow, so a clip is how strangers find a podcast, a streamer or a speaker, and every clip is a way back to the full video. TikTok's own Creator Academy makes the same suggestion: divide a video over 10 minutes into several shorter ones.
The arithmetic is generous. An hour-long episode has more minutes than anyone will watch in a feed, but its best moments stand on their own: the story, the strong opinion, the surprising answer. Clyper finds about 10 of them an hour on Auto, and you can ask for up to 30, a month of daily posts from one video, for 60 credits.
Two kinds of people do the cutting. Creators repurpose their own videos, and clippers post clips of other creators' videos on their own accounts, paid per 1,000 views by the creator (see CPM). The apps pay less per view for short-form: on YouTube, Shorts earn about 3 to 14% of what long videos do per 1,000 views in most niches (see RPM). So short-form's job is reach, and the long video is where people stay.
What makes a short-form clip work
- It opens on the hook. TikTok's Creator Academy suggests something that sparks interest early, ideally within the first 5 seconds. Start on the line itself, not the question before it, and see hook rate for how to measure it.
- It stands alone. Someone who's never heard of the show gets it without the ten minutes before. One idea per clip: a story, a take or an answer, not a summary of the episode.
- It ends on the payoff. Cut on whole sentences, and stop when the point lands.
- It fills the screen. 9:16, with the person talking kept in frame, rather than a wide video with bars above and below.
- It reads with the sound off. Burned-in captions carry it for anyone scrolling in silence.
Questions
How long is a short-form video?
There's no official length. YouTube counts square or vertical videos of up to 3 minutes as Shorts, Instagram lets you record and edit reels of up to 3 minutes, and TikTok takes uploads of up to 60 minutes on the web but suggests splitting anything over 10. A clip cut from a long video usually runs 20 to 60 seconds.
What's the difference between short-form and long-form video?
Short-form is made for a vertical feed of videos people didn't choose, so it has to hook them in seconds. Long-form is a video people pick and settle into, usually 16:9 on YouTube, with room for a whole conversation. Creators use the first to bring people to the second.
Is a 3-minute video short-form?
On YouTube, yes: a square or vertical video of up to 3 minutes is a Short. In a feed, though, most clips that do well are as long as one moment and no longer, often under a minute.
What are examples of short-form video?
TikToks, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts: a podcast guest's best story, a streamer's reaction, a sermon's key line, a tip, a joke. Many are clips cut from longer videos, vertical and captioned.
