What is AI clipping?
Also called AI clip generator, AI clip maker, AI clipping toolUpdated
From Clyper, the AI clipping tool that turns long videos into captioned vertical clips for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Get startedAI clipping, defined
AI clipping is using AI to turn a long video, like a podcast, stream or interview, into short vertical clips of its best moments. An AI clipping tool transcribes the video, picks the moments that stand on their own, cuts them on whole sentences, frames them 9:16, captions every word and scores each clip.
How AI clipping works
Clipping by hand means watching a whole video for the good parts, cutting each one, cropping it to a vertical frame, moving the crop when the speaker changes and typing the captions. AI clipping hands those steps to software, and each step is a different kind of AI:
| Step | What the AI does | What it means for your clips |
|---|---|---|
| Transcribe | Speech recognition writes down every word, with a time on each | Cuts and captions land on the exact word |
| Find moments | A language model reads the whole transcript for passages that make sense on their own | A long stream is read to the end, not skimmed |
| Score | Each moment gets a number for how well its opening holds attention | You post the strongest first |
| Cut | The word timings move each cut to where a sentence starts and ends | No clip opens mid-word or stops before the payoff |
| Reframe | Face tracking finds who's talking and crops 16:9 to 9:16 around them | A vertical clip with the speaker in frame |
| Caption | The words are burned into the picture, timed to the voice | Word-by-word captions that work on mute |
None of it makes new footage. AI clipping cuts what was really said and filmed; it doesn't generate voices, faces or scenes. Each step in more depth, with the mistakes to check for, is in how AI clip generators work.
What AI clipping does well, and what a person still decides
AI is best at the work that grows with the length of the video:
- Reading all of it. A person skimming a 4-hour stream loses focus; an AI clipper reads the transcript to the end, so the last hour is in the running with the first.
- Volume. On Auto, Clyper picks about 10 clips an hour of video, up to 10, and keeps to moments with a real hook. Ask for more and an hour-long video gives up to 30.
- Consistency. Every clip cut on sentences, framed and captioned the same way, at 1080 × 1920.
A person is still better at judgment:
- What to post. A score ranks the clips; it doesn't know your audience or the campaign's brief.
- Moments with few words. A play in a game or a stunned silence barely shows in a transcript, so a picker that reads it can pass it by.
- Names and slang. Speech recognition trips on them. Read each clip's captions once with the sound on.
- The post. The caption, the hashtags and when it goes out. Clyper doesn't post or write them for you.
So most people use both: AI for the first pass, a person for the picks and the fixes. Where the hours go each way is in AI clipping vs manual clipping.
Who uses AI clipping
- Clippers paid by campaigns for every 1,000 views (their CPM), where more good clips means more chances at views. One long video can fill a week of posts. See Clyper for clippers.
- Clipping agencies cutting several creators' videos a week, each client in its own caption style.
- Podcasters and streamers turning their own episodes and stream replays into clips that bring people back to the full video.
Tools charge for different things: minutes of video, clips or videos. Clyper charges a credit for each minute of source video, however many clips you take, so an hour-long episode is 60 credits whether you keep 10 clips or 30: as little as 2 credits a clip. Questions
What is an AI clipping tool?
Software that turns a long video into short clips by itself. You give it a link or a file; it transcribes the video, picks the moments that work on their own, cuts them, crops them to a vertical 9:16 frame and captions them, ready for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Is AI clipping better than clipping by hand?
It's faster at the mechanical work: reading a long transcript, cutting on sentences, framing the speaker and captioning. A person is better at judgment: which clips to post, moments with few words, and what a campaign's brief allows. The best of both is AI for the first pass, then a person checks every clip.
How many clips does AI clipping make from one video?
It depends on the tool and the video. Clyper picks about 10 an hour of video on Auto, up to 10, or as many as you ask for: up to one for every 2 minutes of video and 30 from one video.
Can I use AI clipping for clipping campaigns?
It depends on the campaign. Some briefs ban AI-generated content without saying whether a tool that only cuts and captions the creator's real footage counts. If yours does, ask the campaign in writing before you post.
